So is there any region encoding on this format?
Also the audio looks weak on this system. No losless audio other than PCM, but there won't be room on those small disks for PCM. -

The capacity can go upto 48GB (currently 20-30 i think) so there is enough room for PCM sound, my worry is if its all on 8-10 layers how fast is the layer transition? i mean its bad enough on a dual layer DVD when it pauses in the middle of a film...if they can sort that out with cache or something..?!
In response to what someone asked, i've checked and its states in a press release its region free on both DVD and the VMD discs.Own: Sony Bravia 40" LCD 1080i / Toshiba HD-EP30 HD-DVD / LG 5.1 DTS/DD PL2 / SkyHD, V+, PS3

Each disc holds 33.7gb and costs almost nothing to produce. The advantage is each disc is made out of a dense graham cracker material that goes great with milk. It will take the world by storm!

I really like the idea of HD VMD, and if player and movie prices are low enough then you know online sellers will makes them easily available. I used to get VCD versions of movies that were not readily available in North America and HD VMD could be huge in the Asian markets. It's easy to dismiss the format as a joke but it is an interesting technology to at least investigate.

If people can't even afford HD-DVD, do they really need an HDM player? It's not going to make anything look or sound better if you've got it hooked up to your 27" mono SDTV.

Looks like VMD is going to win. I've been assured countless times by HD DVD supporters that price always wins out, and VMD is definitely the cheapest HD format.

Maybe they could be rental-only, with the discs self-destructing after a week. We could call it HDIVX.

This war is turning in to an absolute joke. Why would a company in their right mind add more fuel to this fire and them jump in the fire. This is getting ridiculous.
