Default 'Song of the South' on blu ray would be great

http://www.songofthesouth.net/news/index.html

See the above link for this interesting "rumor" I read tonight that there's a(possibly) a trailer for Disney's "Song of the South" on the upcoming Sleeping Beauty Blu ray and DVD. I have wanted a "legit" copy of this film for years. It's so not controversial it's a classic film. I rode 'Splash mountain' at Disney this past year for the first time and was reminded of how cool a film this was. I hope this 'rumor' is true. A Blu-ray release would be spectacular! Thoughts?

I don't know about this making it to BD... could happen I guess.

I've never seen the film and only read a little on it so I have no idea how offensive it actually is but I'd think Disney would rather forget this film ever existed.

Seriously, even if it's not offensive it would still bring a load of very bad press for them. It would stir up all the original negative reaction to this film, all of the protests, etc. I really don't know if Disney would want to bring it all back up again.

I could be wrong though....

I've actually gotten to see Song Of The South recently...we have a very cool video store that has a VHS copy converted from the European release...not the world's best quality but it was neat to see. The rumor is that Disney was planning on releasing Song Of The South on DVD from awhile back but with an included documentary on racism and the meaning of the film at the time of its release and the controversy since. Many hardcore Disney collectors have been lobbying for its release....I think it's likely to happen.

I really doubt if we will see it in our lifetime. As long as there is a breath in Al Sharpton's lungs there will be outrage over this film. The trap they used to catch Brear Rabbit was named after a term that is considered a racial slur word. Jesse Jackson would be outside of Cinderalla's castle in Disney World with signs and a megaphone and calling for a boycott of all Disney products. It would be financial suicide to officially release this film.

Hardly

The NAACP has even gone on public record that they have no objections to it as an artifact of its time. That's simply urban legend. Disney can release it any time they choose to, and in fact had no problem doing so in the mid-80s when Jesse Jackson was at the height of his power.

no offense, but i'd trust a wandering bum who was looking for nickels to add up to buy some meth more than i'd ever trust snopes.

look at Disney and how much of their shit they've put on dvd. i mean, if mickey mouse took a dump, it'd be on dvd already. for this to have NEVER, EVER seen the light of day is an indicator of something. now, the disney treasures line (the silver cased releases), i'd say may go this route, but for a standard dvd, or blu-ray, i doubt we'll see it for some time. if i'm wrong, hey, i don't care as i don't want this anyways lol

If Disney really wanted to quash it, then it wouldn't release it outside of the U.S. However, it HAS been released outside of the U.S., so the company is just being a chode...maximizing profits where it still can without attracting attention.

exactly poster--it has been released OFFICIALLY ON DVD in France, and can be obtained through sellers.
be wary though if you want an original piece as many copies being sold are copies taken from the official dvd.

I've been waiting for the Treasures release of this film.

It's not likely, not for awhile any way.

I still think Disney doesn't have much to be regretful over. Sure, it's offensive and such, but it's a matter of the times. Not to mention, WB and Terrytoons was/is a hell of a lot worse.

This boycott was started out of respect for the artist. As we all know...Sony or MM don't have any.

Well, There was no "protests" ever against the film when it came out....in 1946. And it played in theaters as late as 1987 or so because I was taken to see it prior to that when Disney used to replay their movies as theaters. Let's put it this way: It's on par with' Gone with the Wind' as far as being 'controversial'. Any trouble getting a copy of that film? Exactly.

Yea, well of course I'm talking about a US release. I'm aware of the many, many copies available online. I want a Disney US of A release.

Financial suicide? That's overstating things to the extent that hyperbole can reach, IMO. Like others have said, 'Disney Treasures' would be a great placre to release this. We'll all find out once that Sleeping Beauty blu ray comes out anyway. also, this is one of Disney's most requested titles, and has been for years.

I thought your post was funny though, whether it was meant to be or not!

I have a dvd of this from it's 2006 BBC Broadcast, and I watch it at least once every couple of months (less since I have Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Mark3 Final), and would KILL for an official release on ANY format.

And an Uncut/Uncensored Fantasia as well.

But I honestly doubt any of this happens, especially once Roy Disney passes, which is probably what Disney is waiting on.

Any particular reason to distrust Snopes, given the fact that it cites sources?

I guess we'll all find out close to or on Oct. 7th when sleeping beauty comes out. I have a copy as well but, it's just so-so. I got it at a convention back in 2004. I want that official release with all the stuff posters, press releases, etc. the way 'Disney Treasures' does it. It's a product of its time. I fuckin' hate political correctness.
