I did a forum search for "dvd upconversion" but the threads it pulled up were old (2007 & 2008) and my main interest is in the new Slim model. I am going to buy one primarily for Blu-ray and games, but I have a lot of DVDs in my collection and my old Pioneer player is about to bite the dust. I have read PS3 reviews online and they range from mediocre to great upscaling depending on who you read. I am not expecting OPPO quality from a 300 dollar player/game machine but am hopeful it scales and deinterlaces pretty well.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. ![]() |

I have a older style PS3 and think it scales and deinterlaces pretty well, but I wouldn't expect OPPO quality from a 300 dollar game machine.

The upscaling on Sony BDP-S360 (CDN$ 199) is about equal to PS3. Add CDN$50 more you can get Pioneer BDP-320 with upscaling quality very close to the Oppo BD-83 (I own both).

I agree with Gaara, though I can't provide any direct comparisons like Susilo.
The upconversion and deinterlacing on the older PS3s is good, but not of the highest caliber. I think that unless you really can't stand a non-picture-perfect upconversion like from an Oppo, you'll be pleased enough at having a gaming machine and a BD player that also does a decent job when upconverting. As a side note, I have read from multiple sources but not independently confirmed that the upconversion on the Slim models is practically equivalent to the old models, as they didn't change a bit. You might wish to confirm that on your own however.
