bfellow's post above explains it reasonably why it would take a while before it dies.

Thats what I've been thinking. If the firmware is indeed changing the way the system runs internally, failures would not neccessarily be instant. I'm tempted to sell my 60 giger and pick up the 80 giger w/ bonus controller for $250. Atleast I would be back under warranty.

You are going to pay $250 just to be under warranty?

Actually wouldn't pay anything if I sell my 60 gb for enough money.

So you want to buy 20 more gigs? I do not know why someone would want to pay full price for a out of warranty PS3 with suspected bricking problem.

Some want it because of the backwards compatibility. Would I be able to get $250+ for it? Honestly, I don't know what the market is for the 60gigers.

I know the problem isn't totally widespread but there could also be more ppl with this issue if they decide to update the fw(if that is what is causing the problem). There are quite a few ppl that bought a ps3 for blu-rays only.

Am I really gonna buy another ps3 & sell my current one off? More than likely no. Just being a little hesitant on updating it and trying to see how all this plays out.

Wasn't firmware 2.40 another cause for bricked units some time ago?

I refused to update my PS3 until I bought Ghostbusters Blu-Ray, and haven't updated it since.

Thankfully I rarely use my PS3 for gaming so i don't need BD live or oline gaming access.

I feel for anyone whose unit shit the bed after the update.

Well, add me to the list of bricked players. I updated shortly after the 3.1 came out last month. All was fine until last night when a blu-ray I was playing froze 15 minutes from the end of the movie. Ejected the disc and now it doesn't want to read ANY disc. Don't know what to do. I definitely do not want to pay $150 more to Sony.

The trouble with that argument is there are lost of people with different gens of hardware not having issues yet running the new firmware.

Someone should do a poll and get the temperature of the PS3 users just on this site and see.

My PS3 worked fine before the update for BD Live and since the mandatory firmware update it doesn't read any discs.

Sony wants $140 to fix it meanwhile Microsoft fixes everyone for free for 3 YEARS!

But somehow MS gets the bad rep?

If i recall correctly, MS also denied the rrod at the beginning.

There was even some speculation at one time that MS knew there was problems with the 360 before it was even released. I don't know if these speculations were ever found to be true, but MS did not take care of the broken 360's from the beginning. It took time just as this will. It will more than likely amount to how many ppl are affected by this & if they can prove that the fw had something to do with it.

That is true but there is also a caveat. I paid MS about $120 i think to fix my 360 when it broke. A year later they extended everyone's warantee and sent me a check in the mail to refund my payment. That was pretty sweet and unexpected.

Angry

My 60GB PS3 became a paperweight after the 3.0/3.01 firmware updates were applied...can't play PS3 games or Blu-Ray movies. It was 100% OK before the updates and I can now only play a game for about 10-15 mins if the system decides to see the disc in the first place; more often than not, it doesn't even realize that a disc has been inserted.

I tried rebuilding the database, restored the file system and reformatted the system...nothing helped. I'm going to try a cleaning disc, but I don't expect that to make a lot of difference because the timing of the drive failure is just too coincidental with the firmware update.

I just got Uncharted 2 in the mail because it was pre-ordered a few months ago and I can't even play the fracken game. Sony is going to lose BIG TIME on this mess if their customers can't play their games or blu-ray movies...why else would someone waste their time and $$$ on a PS3???

I'd be very interested in joining the class action suit, so does anyone have information on how to go about doing that?

The exact same thing happened to my ps3, I had to pay 150 bucks and get it fixed. It's complete bullcrap but maybe sometime in the future they'll refund my money and extend the warranty
