Sony telling people to F off after their update caused the problems is the wrong answer to the question, I dont care if the warranty is up or not because the PS3 wouldnt have had ANY issues if the firmware actually caused this malfunction
Right there with you on every word you said.

Well I'll be damned. We (roommate and I) thought it was just an unlucky hardware failure cuz very shortly after that firmware update our system stopped recognizing any disc and a few days later we find out the usb ports don't recognize anything either. But if this is magically happening just now to others as well then it surely can't be a coincidence. But i just don't know how you prove something like that other than just saying it stopped working after that upgrade. If I remember right ours worked for a few days before going south and if that's all we can say and the warranty is up, what can possibly be done by Sony unless millions begin failing suddenly?

It's incredible that Sony asks for 150 bucks to fix your PS3.

They should have exchanged any defective PS3 with a new one, period.

But of course, anything to save a few bucks. I hope this suit cost them more than the money they avoided wasting by refusing owners any sort of free exchange or repair.

This was unethical.

Default PS3 Failure

I hate to tell you but just because you have watched a few BD movies since the update does not mean you won't be affected. I updated to 3.0 last month and played a bunch of games and watched 3 or 4 movies, only to have my system completely freeze up last night. Unbelievable!!

My issue is not only the money to fix it but the inconvenience of being without my PS3 for up to 60 days (this is how long Sony reps said they may have it before I get it back).

I would love to know if there is going to be a firmware update to fix this before I send my machine into the netherland for the next 2 months.

SONY, PLEASE GIVE US SOME RESPONSE!!!!!

Damn..that sucks. A month after your update and it freezes up on you like that!! Hope you get an answer soon to your question about a firmware to fix the...other firmware.

The way Sony is handling this is BS!

wow so you update and your ok time passes and your system dies/freezes and it's the updates fault? what great logic.

maybe it died or froze and did so cause the hardware just crapped out.

ps3 may have a lower failure rate than the 360 but guess what... it will still fail.

people love to point to causes but sometimes shit just happens.

What exactly happens? I've had a problem with an update for Little Big Planet. The download gets to about 10% then stops. I'm wondering if this is something involving the firmware problem? I downloaded the demo for Uncharted last week and have had the LBP problem since Saturday.

I read on a thread from another site where someone said they dl'd the LBP update and then their ps3 messed up. The person mentioned some of the same issues surrounding the 3.0/3.1 updates.

folks may want to check their HD... when I upgraded to a new 500 gig HD it would install a number of games np... but eventually when it tried to write on a bad sector the HD would hang. <- I never did verify it was a bad sector but was the conclusion I came to.

I could do a quick format but when I tried the complete format... the one that takes over 24 hours... it would hang when I started it.

A new replacement HD and I could do a complete format without any problems, and I have not encountered any install hang ups at all.

Default PS3 Failure

My machine is an original 60GB version and has worked perfectly since 2007 until this past Tuesday. I downloaded the update in mid-September. I was watching Wolverine and about 15 minutes into it, the picture freezes and the machine starts making a fairly loud grinding sound. I hit the stop button but it won't stop...the picture is just frozen on the screen. I end up having to cut the power to the machine. Then started again and no movie loads. I ejected it then tried three other BD movies and none of them load nor is there any sound coming from the machine. I then tried a couple of games and same thing. The weird thing is the menu works perfectly as do my downloaded trial games.

I took the plunge and shipped the unit to Sony on Wednesday...their customer support people told me that they are aware of the problem and that they do not believe a firmware update can fix it. They said the optical drive will need to be repaired.

Yes, it is theoretically possible that something other than the firmware update is causing this but the timing seems pretty suspect given what is happening to others.

with couple of people sure you don't need to prove it, but when it reaches a hundred with expired warranties, then there might be a pattern. Few thousand, you have a serious case.

firmware can't affect hardware, so it clearly wasn't us
This would be Sony's undoing. Anyone can write some firmware code to affect hardware such as increasing/decreasing fan speed. Think of the numerous errata on the CPUs themselves. You can easily make a firmware update that force a CPU usage to max out regardless of workload and force the fan to turn off to overheat the system.

I find it curious that many folks report the identical pattern here. That failing about 15 minutes into a movie or game... there's something to that.

The thing that doesn't make any sense to me is the time that goes by before it dies. If the firmware changes and it affects the optical drive, then it should fail right afterward not 2-6 weeks later....
