Default I'm thinking about getting a PS3... should I wait?

So, I'm thinking about getting a PS3 soon because I want to get a better Blu-ray player for in my living room and move my BDP-S300 into my bedroom. Sometime between late September and late October, Sony will introduce a new PS3 model with 80GBs of storage and discontinue the current models. If I'm not a serious gamer, is there any reason for me to wait 1 - 2 months for the updates version? I really can't wait that long to play the new Madden.

Supposedly the new models will have the new/improved chipsets that apparently use a lot less power and produce less heat than the current models. I think it's worth waiting. I'm also considering getting a Blu-ray machine soon and so far the PS3 still looks like the best bet in spite of being a game console.

Hmmm? That might be worth waiting for. I can't even get a 40gb machine right now. Every store where I live is sold out.

The new 80GB is basically a 40GB model with upgraded hdd only and still retaining no card reader, 2 usb and no BC. What it has is the same chip set as the 40GB 65nm cell. If you want BC grab the MGS4 80GB bundle now before they are gone. BTW the MGS4 80GB uses the older 90nm cell chip set.

New 80GB- 2 usb, no carder reader, DS3 control pad, no BC. ($399)
MGS4 80GB- 4 usb, multi-card reader, DS3 control pad, has BC. ($499) While they last Sony isn't shipping any more.

I don't think they do SACD. I just bought a MGS4 Bundle and it does SACD.

The new models do not play SACD. It is an upgraded 40gb, essentially. They're due out in September, officially, but some stores already have them in stock and are selling them early (per Engadget). They are releasing in Europe this week, I believe. I'm looking into getting one too, as most stores have stopped selling the 40GB model. So it's just a matter of waiting.

There are only a couple of good games out for it. Uncharted and MGS4, LittleBigPlanet looks great but there aren't that many exclusives. The online store sucks, even with the new update. If you want a great blu-ray player, you can't go wrong with this machine. That is all I use it for really. I use my 360 for gaming. I'll rent LittleBigPlanet. I'm not a fanboy, I have both systems so don't attack me for my statement. This is my opinion. You are entitled to your opinion so keep it to yourself. I'm so tired of the fanboy attacks on this board.

The new 80GBs are out in stores right now. They have shipped to retailers and are ready for sale. They are like the 40s, except with bigger hard drive and a dual shock 3. I would pick one up immediately.

I agree with you. I'm picking one up for LittleBigPlanet. That game is going to blow my world apart. I think it's a great system, don't get me wrong, but it's severely lacking in AAA exclusives. I am looking forward to gmaes like inFamous and MAG, so it will come around I'm sure.

They have them at Wal Mart.

Also, I guess the new 80gb PS3s are out. I went to Game Stop yesterday and to my surprise they already had them out.

I think you should get a Playstation 3 as they are the best Blu-Ray players on the market right now. I love mine and have had no problems with it.

If the PS3 is good enough for the good folks at Criterion to use as their reference Blu-ray player, then it should be good enough for everyone else:
