Default PS3 Firmware update 2.42

Just turned on the PS3 and got prompted to update to 2.42.

Any ideas anyone?

Quote:
Sony released the next firmware update for its PS3 game console. We will print the entire release description provided by Sony’s Eric Lempel here:

“Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some Playstation 3 and Playstation format software.”

The firmware download page on playstation.com still listed v2.41 as the most current software version at the time of this writing. “Some” Playstation 3 and Playstation format software? Perhaps we could convince Eric to provide a few more sentences of information?

It appears to be a minor update, but just in case you haven’t upgraded to version 2.4 yet and intend to play online, you may want to download this update – as it is required for online gaming, if we believe the comments made in the user comments of the posting.

May want to move this to the Smackdown forum because im pissed off with Sony's little updates without any information.

It would be nice to know which games were effected so I can then know if they resolve any issues id been having.

I'm actually glad for their little updates. It lets you know that they're constantly making it better and better. Although, I do agree that they should give more detail in their descriptions

yeah I hate these PS3 updates since you never really know what they do and they are a pain to download and install, why cant they take like 10 seconds like on the 360?

Well, I know it didn't address the DTS-MA popping on Harold and Kumar Guantanamo bay.

Would it be out of line to assume this update ads (or enhances existing) YouTube support for Thursday's release of Pixel Junk Eden?

No, its not that at all.

Whenever they release the "vague" updates I always check us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate for what the update actually changed.

add the www before the us.playstation link.

I hate having to have 10 posts to show you guys a link.

After I got 2.41 I sometimes get no audio from the home screen... ala

Watching a downloaded trailer. Seems to be a firmware issue as its causing my PS3 & Onkyo to have HDMI handshaking issues.

Hope 2.42 fixes this.

I do believe it's because the you download the entire file for the Playstation each time while for the 360 you download patches for the file.

Create a folder named PS3 on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named UPDATE

Download/Copy the update firmware and save it in the UPDATE folder.

Make sure Folder names are in CAPS
