well, just to add my own stats to the mix, I have an 80GB that has had problems twice.

First time was in warranty, stopped reading blu-ray discs (everything else worked fine), and they fixed/shipped back in a few days, not so bad. But recently it stopped reading discs completely (looks like the drive motor is shot, cuz the discs don't spin at all) and I'm about 8 months out of warranty.

Love my ps3 I use pretty much every feature regularly, so I'll definitely be repairing or replacing it in some way, but not sure how yet. I'd like the added hardware based ps2 emulation with a 60GB, but it seems people say those have a lot of problems too. And I really won't be surprised at all if the first few batches of slim ps3's have issues until they work out all the kinks. Like I said, love my ps3 but I don't have the MOST confidence in Sony QA practices...

If in warranty use it, if not 150 is a lot to pay to have it fixed .

My 60GB PS3 just died. It doesn't get the YLoD though, it just shuts off completely like when the power goes out. I refuse to pay $150 to get it fixed. It's probably going on ebay or I'll sell it somewhere else and just get a slim for slightly more than the cost of getting it fixed. I may just wait until I the black friday ads get leaked to see if there are any good deals.

Ok, so I am on the same boat.

My 60GB PS3 is playing movies & games but after a while, it would freeze. The game's audio would turn off & then when a cut scene comes up, it freeze. When I play BDs, it would play for a few minutes then freeze up. The XMB works fine though.

I reformatted the HDD & restored defaults but it didn't fix it.

My dilemma is, should I get Sony to fix it & pony up $150 OR trade it at GS for $145 & pay the difference for the slim?

Their trade-in for a bricked PS3 is $145!!! I would go with the latter,imho.

Well that's the thing, my PS3 isn't completely bricked. It will load the movie & game but then it would stall. They would only test the system out to see if the game/movie loads.

The trade in is $120 but they have a special right now that adds $25 to your trade in.

I think SOny's price is too steep. They only solace there might be is if they put the YLOD under warranty to match the movie by MS you might get refunded. Probably never happen.

So unless you use the features of the 60gb you'd probably be better off with the lesser, slimmer, ps3. At least then you'd get a 1 year warranty and have the possibility to buy extended coverage.
