Default Questions concerning the Eye camera for PS3.

I saw this at BB the other day. I want to buy it but I was reading the back of the packaging and I read something that kind of makes me hesitant. There was something about downloading a free software from the PSN store. Do I have to download this software in order to use this camera?? I am not online with my PS3 and I dont know if I ever will be. I store alot of photos on my and I would love to use this camera's edit functions to customize my photos. I would also like to record video. Can I still do this without the software download?? If I need the download, can I download the software onto a sd card and install it on my PS3?? Anybody know of any future games that are coming out that I can use the camera with (besides Singstar and Eye Of Judgment)?? Thanks for all responses.

The software is editing software, so it depends on how much you're planning on doing with your videos.

As far as games that use the camera, there are plenty, but most of them are on the PSN store, which is a problem if you're hesitant to go online. However Burnout Paradise also uses the Playstation Eye, as does Rainbow Six Vegas to a small degrees, as does last year's Tiger Woods game. LittleBigPlanet is also supposed to make use of it in some fashion.

Eye of Judgement is hella fun if you have someone at home to play with. Even without someone, the AI is pretty good.

The only downside is it's pretty finicky about lighting and a pain in the ass to setup and get exactly right so you can play. Especially since you need a big table and a light source sitting directly over the game cloth.

No, you can use it without the EyeCreate ap but it will be limited to game-specific options for that title.

No you need the software.

No, it's exclusively available via the PSN Store.

The editing program is lackluster and a joke, do not buy the Eye solely for the purpose of making videos/editing photos. It is extremely limited. Get a webcam, if you want a cost-effective way to make good quality videos. I have the Microsoft VX-7000 and I make great videos on it.

PS3 Eye is mainly for online interactions and for using those Eye games such as Aquatopia and Mesmerize. The photo editing is terribly restrictive, and I would much rather save them on a flash drive and move them to a PC for my editing needs.

the editing program is decent as it is free. you cannot diss it and put it in comparison really with that of others. it is made for the ps3 and for the gaming on it. it's not made for you to connect and make home videos. that is why it costs less and all. it does the job for me and is well worth the money in my opinion. you can also use it on that high stakes poker game from the PlayStation Network alongside the games mentioned above. If you go online with it, you can do like a conference chat with others. if they have a camera you can see them live and vice versa. it also has a built in mic. so in a way, if you ever do play online you can use it for taking pics, in game use, videos, chatting live and of course use the built in mic as a bluetooth headset which isn't a bad deal. pick up a used one at gamestop for about $35 and try it out. if you don't like it, you can always return it. I have yet to hear any complaints from anyone who has bought one so far. I'm pretty happy with it myself.

I love mine personally, and for the cost; it is a great value. However the editing program is very limited, but I guess that's subjective since it ultimately depends upon what you're used to and what you would expect. An important omission we don't know is the degree of editing OP wants to accomplish with his content. Further, AFAIK without going online via the PS3, there is no way to download the EyeCreate software.

One of the most critical points OP established is that he is not online with PS3 and not sure if he ever will be, so I refrained from discussing the benefits of games that engage the Eye and focused more so on his specific questions.

Thank you Geonosis for taking each question and answering each one very detailed and to the point. Thanks also for others feedback. Very much appreciated. My is in the basement so lighting is either very bright or very dark..no middle ground whatsoever. I keep going back and forth on whether to go online with my . As for the camera....I think I am going to sit on for awhile and think about it. Thanks again everybody.

Speaking of EoJ, I saw it at Wal-Mart yesturday for $29.99. If I didn't have it already, I would so snatch it up at that price. It was $10 cheaper then the camera alone sitting the next aisle over.

My kid and his friends love using the editing program. Doing crazy mirror distortion effects, ghost trails, stop motion photography (we did a small video ala "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel).

However, this is only for simply fun - nothing professional.

There are very few games and only trials of topaq and Creature (can't remember the name) are any fun.

Sony has been VERY slow to release anything new for the Eyetoy.

You can use the eyetoy with certain games (Burnout for example takes photos of you for your Driver's ID and pictures of you when you pass a test, etc. Also, if you crash and are playing with a friend - it shows a pic of you when you crashed. You can disable that feature when playing with strangers).

Overall, there isn't much to do with it. Hopefully, they start supporting it more soon.

The PS3 Eyetoy works much, much better then the PS2. You don't have to have every single light in the house on to get it to work properly.

I am not sure if the PS2 Eyetoy works with the PS3. . . . does it?
