Default Seems like the shortage in Japan was indeed closer to 80,000

Seems like 88,400 was the actual number of units sold on launch day:

Since pretty much everybody was sold out, this must be pretty close to the actual launch number.

As with the other thread, I've moved your post to the 'Blu-ray and Video Game Consoles' forum as I think it is more appropriate here.

And with GameStop announcing they will not have all the systems they thought they would on launch it is apparent that Sony is not going to meet their 400,000 units in the US either.

The 400,000 was never meant entirely for the US. It was 400,000 for North America, including Mexico and Canada, and some other countries as well. Either GameStop didn't know this (unlikely) or other stores bought more units from Sony than GameStop was able to, so they had to reduce their allotment.

400,000 x $600 = $240,000,000 ? Maybe I should built my own game console. Anyone wants to be my partner?

Well it is costing them a lot more to make, they are actually making a loss on each one. Remember the $600 is the retail price, trade price would probably be a lot lower.
