Here is the official press release for all your details:

Get more from online gaming on PLAYSTATION®3 with the free 2.40 firmware enhancement PS3™ to give online gamers the features they’ve been requesting: XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) access in-game and trophies available in this free, automatic system upgrade
June 30, 2008: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced new online gaming functionality for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™), which will become available on July 2, 2008 with the 2.40 enhancement, an automatic firmware upgrade that delivers several of the features most requested by gamers. Combined with PLAYSTATION®Network’s unique service of free* online gaming, the enhancement makes PS3 an even more attractive platform of choice for the online gamer.

Firstly, the 2.40 enhancement allows XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) access in-game. This means that you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller. With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing. While you can’t pause an online multiplayer game involving other people, you can rejoin play at any time when you’ve finished browsing. Along with these enhanced communications features, the Friends list capacity will double to 100 Friends.

2.40 also delivers trophies to recognise players’ achievements in the online arena. Other competitive activities recognise winners with trophies - so why not gaming on PS3? Many online games will have gold, silver and bronze trophies - with platinum available for those who snag all three - all displayed on the XMB for everyone to see.

Super Stardust™ HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released last year, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer a variety of trophies**. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

· BUZZ!™ Quiz TV

· LittleBigPlanet™

· MotorStorm™ Pacific Rift

· NBA 09 - PS3

· PAIN**

· PixelJunk™ Eden

· Resistance 2™

· SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation

· Warhawk™**
Also... Criterion and Naughty Dog have said they will add trophy support for Burnout Paradise and Uncharted: Drake’s fortune at some point in the future.

It's a lot more free-roaming then most of those games.. It's more like geometry wars but in a 3d plain. It's awesome though.

SSHD would be more fun with online co-op play, and yeah that list is lackluster. I know it's a start but so few games? I would think at least 15.

here's my experience so far: Finally, but its not what they promised. you can access the XMB, but the only thing i have been able to do is chat in game and check my messages. you still can't access music while playing which is what i want the most. also, i have yet to see any mention on whether or not the trophies will be retroactive which i think is very important. there are many games that i have rented/ bought, played through several times, returned/ traded in, and do not want to have to repeat the game to get the trophies.... especially Metal Gear Solid 4... i've played through it 3 times already and don't want to do it again just for trophies.

You're out of luck. Sony has already announced that trophies WILL NOT be retroactive, because they want to avoid what happened with Xbox Live when achievement points were first instituted. At that time, people got an unfair start by trading or downloading "100% complete" files available on the internet. It gave some folks a significant and unfair boost to their gamerscore. Sony is biting the bullet on this one and forcing a level playing field by bringing everyone (and every game) back to "zero." So far they've said that no game will be retroactively award trophies based on game saves, and some titles (like COD 4) have already been confirmed to be NOT be patched for trophies. Sony is predicting a 70% coverage of games by the trophy system, and while that number may rise in the future, Infinity Ward (COD 4) and Insomniac (Resistance: Fall of Man, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction) have announced they currently have no plans to patch previous games. Of course they might change their minds on that at a later date, but for now, that's the situation.

Well...it ads up to the game's replay value. If the game is cool, it's just one more reason to play it again. Chatting in game is up to the game company, and some games already had that. Sony just wanted to concentrate on text messaging for now, voice and music will come later. I tell you though, playing my own music to any game I want will be a big accomplishment, if Sony can add that I''ll be the happiest man alive.

Burnout Paradise has announced trophies will be retro-active since they are associated with your PSN ID and can not be copied.

Warhawk has also hinted certain trophies will be retro-active and tied to your rank (all Warhawk stats are tracked online and connected to you PSN ID); however, there will be other trophies which are not connected to your stats.
