There is no official release date yet. Version 2.36 is actually the next firmware update coming. Should be here in a day or two.

When a date is announced the official Playstation blog will be the first to announce it.

As has already been mentioned, 2.36 is now out and ready to download.

2.40 has no release date. Could be next month, in time for E3, could be earlier.

Insiders have said that 2.40 is now in bug squashing mode, so it's really just a matter of how long before they can approve the final code and then get it out there, so unfortunately there's no way to accurately guess that without knowing exactly what's going on with the dev team working on it.

Firmware version 2.36 is actually out right now. I think I read in IGN that 2.40 will come out sometime in June so probably will be available later part of this month.

2.36 is supposed to add stability to certain Playstation games. Whether this means solidifying online components for the PS3 games, certain bugs in PS3 games, or adding better backwards compatibility to PS1/2 games is unknown.

2.40 is essentially "the big one" for PS3 owners who are gamers. It will add the "in game XMB (cross media bar)" that will finally allow PS3 owners to send messages and communicate with each other without having to quit out entirely from a game and return to the "desktop," and it will also add "trophies," the PS3 equivalent of the Xbox 360's achievements. There are also other undisclosed features that Sony has said will be coming with 2.40.

Basically 2.40 is an update to add parity to the Playstation Network against Xbox Live, and lessen the criticisms people have when comparing one with the each other, since Xbox Live is still without a doubt, the better online playing experience because of the suite of community and communication features it hosts that the PSN currently lacks.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I hope they improve the playstation store. They hardly ever put new trailers or demos on it. I'm sure no matter what they do they'll PS3 will never be as good as XBOX. I have all three systems and Xbox 360 is the only one Ive ever really played. I have probably played a total of 4 hours in a year on my wii, and 0 hours or seconds for that matter on my PS3. Its not because I'm a fan boy, well its because Ive never seen a game that caught my eye thats PS3 exclusive. Awesome blu-ray player though.

You might want to try Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I highly recommend it as--almost universally--do most other game journalists. If you have no experience with the Metal Gear story (and it's pretty substantial, the franchise is over 20 years old now) you might want to check out the Playstation Store update tomorrow. Konami is providing a free Metal Gear database to users that succinctly summarizes the plot and characters of previous games. It even has a feature where it scans your hard drive for MGS 4 games saves and--depending on what it finds--will block potential spoiler entries in the database from you so you won't inadvertently ruin MGS 4 for yourself. Since it's free, there's no reason to not check it out.

But I would say again, consider MGS 4, it's one of those rare games that comes out in a console's lifespan that goes down in the history of that console as a classic.

I know what you mean...I'm the same except I have played my ps3 for about 13 hours but that was only for MGS4 which I beat in 13 hours. Just gave the game away to a friend for free today and told him to keep it. I won't play another ps3 game untill they come out with one that is better than MGS4 now...so that's going to be a while. OK back to my 360 now.

I heard the 2.40 update will be out within 2 weeks of 2.36....don't quote me though it's just what I've heard.

EDIT: What I've heard is that it'll be within 9-10 days of 2.36.

You could very well be right about that. I'm sure Sony is making it a priority to get it out before E3 if possible so they can talk about it when they hold their press conference.

Of course, that all depends on whether they can get it bug free in time.

But really this feature is not new since most of us would have seen or used it on a 360 (to which I need to buy a replacement as I don't want to pay for repairs). It's only new because the PS3 doesn't have it....yet.

in terms of the trophies. how do you guys think this will be implemented? new games only? will older games get them? i mean i like getting achievements on the xbox 360, but am kinda curious on how it would work on the ps3
