Default RPG for PS3?

For the first time since 1978, a brand-new video game console lives at my house. (I had an Odyssey 2000. Yes, I'm old; we need not discuss that further.)

Due to the untimely death of HD-DVD, and due to a $100 gift card deal at Wal-Mart combined with a $100 Sony Card rebate deal, I am now the proud owner of a PS3, which will primarily be used as a Blu-Ray player.

However, I suppose I should actually try playing some games on the damn thing. I used to be quite the D&D player. Are there any good RPG-style games for the PS3? One I've looked at a little bit is Oblivion; is that as good as it looks?

As an older gamer such as myself I too dabbled in the D&D arts

You cannot go wrong with Oblivion, it has an opened ended world where you can go anywhere and do anything! Like a gaming session of D&D I could spend 2 hours or more in one of the larger towns talking to folk and looking through shops!

It has a huge storyline that you can do, or just wander from town to town doing quests for the villagers, wander into the forests exploring caves, join guilds, lots of things to do. Its a first person game or you can switch to 3rd person! I've been playing mine for close to 150 hours since Nov 07.

If your not sure you can pick up the original Oblivion for cheap or go for the more expensive game of the year edition. Difference is the original has only one of the two expansions released while the GOTY has both.

If you do like Oblivion, keep an eye out for Fallout 3 this October. Its kinda the same game only in a furture setting. Guns instead of swords and magic.

Hope that helps!

Yes, get Oblivion. I've got >45 hours on just one character (16lvl warrior) and that's just doing the main quests. I haven't even done any of the guild or side quests yet or done any dungeon diving.

Another one you might try is Folklore. Not really a strict RPG though.

I made an RPG thread to track upcoming releases if you're interested.

Oblivion is excellent. Folklore is RPG-ish, but seems to have its fans. Enchanted Arms is...well, typical JRPG stuff, just with some annoying voice acting.

Beyond that, it's kind of barren right now. If you've got a PS3 with BC though, there's a wealth of RPG content to play from the PS2 era.

I like Folklore alot. In my opinion is folklore not an traditional rpg, but it has enough rpg elements to recommend it to ps3 owner.
Personally i like the art design and the "collecting faeries" aspect.

Is Oblivion like WoW (never played it) where you mostly wander around and kill stuff and do the occasional quest? Minus the other trolls out there who like to kill low level players for the fun of it?

That's kind of a correct way to think of it. A lot of people have compared Oblivion to an "Offline MMO" so you wouldn't be straying too far off thinking in those terms. Of course the other difference is its primarily intended to be played in first person view, and you don't have all the craziness with timers on spells, calculating damage over time and spamming hot-keyed attack combos, the combat is real time; you hit, you do damage, you miss, you do none, it's not a combat animation playing out while invisible dice are rolled in the background.

I enjoyed Oblivion but I did not like the level match thing. I MUCH prefer set levels. That way I must rack up to be able to survive farther out.
