basically, online features for content they couldn't put on the disk or held for after release that will be downloaded to your player..
from low level stuff like trailers, deleted scenes, cast interviews, or linking to IMDB for info about other movies. to higher end capabilities like ringtones, games, or chatting with other viewers.

BD-Live is the branded name for internet connectivity. BD-Live is nothing more than that. Studios and specific releases take advantage of the BD-Live functionality in various ways. For example Saw 4 and Rambo have MoLog (movie log) feature, where you build your own visual commentary and can share it online with others. MIB has "Intergalactic Pursuit" a live online trivia game for up to 8 players, you play against people online. Sleeping Beauty will mark the first major live title, featuring "Disney Movie Chat," the ability to send text messages throughout the movie to friends. The host can invite friends/family to a specific screening and control the video. Disney Video Msg allows you to record a video, and upload it into the movie. You could for example, make a short video explaining a fun fact or something you like about a specific scene in a film and send to people online. Other titles have ways to share scenes with people, download new content, trailers, etc.
BD-Live is still very new, so the possibilities are endless. Disney, Universal, Paramount and Sony are very committed to developing online content. Fox is also working on some content due later this year, as is WB. Which I anticipate will receive a huge push as they did with HD DVD.
