Default PS3 Makes a Clicking Noise Shutting Down

The title says it all. My 60 gig PS3 makes a very faint clicking noise after it shuts off. I replaced the 60 gig HDD with a 160 HDD, but I honestly don't know if the new drive is causing this clicking noise.

Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

I hope so. The more I use my PS3, the more satisified I am with it. I am waiting for a final profile (did I use the correct term?) before I buy another Blu-Ray player.

Eh ... I don't know if "final" is the right word for describing profiles (edit. though that is a term that gets used a lot for people describing (I guess) profile 2). There's gonna be a profile 3 for high quality audio of some description, and there's a thread in one of the blu-ray sub forums about a 4th profile, I'm not sure if that turned out to be rumor/speculation though.

If you are in a very quiet room you usually can hear the PS3 accessing the harddrive, which makes a faint clicking/chirping noise. My suggestion would be to listen when you turn it on if you see a little orange light flashing on the front and here that noise its probably the harddrive you are hearing. It is barely audible but under noise-free conditions it is noticeable. You might not see the light flashing if you are powering down, I've never bothered to check. If it aint that, its probably the fans I guess which probably isn't a good sign if you never noticed it before.

It's the HD. I took it out and messed with it a little and it makes alot less noise now. It still continues to make the noise but i'll probably upgrade the hd anyways so no worry.

Thanks to everyone for responding.

Ugh, what happened to the days when all you had to do was buy a video player, connect it to your TV and not have to do anything else? I can easily update my firmware since I have a PS3, but there is no way in hell that my sisters are going to be bothered with this updating crap. It makes buying a blu-ray player for them difficult. Now that blu-ray is the HD format of choice, the industry needs to manufacture a player that never needs a firmware update.

I am going to check again tonight.

I bought this 60 gig just before the 2007 Christmas season in which many people were sold defective PS3's. I hope that I was not one of them.

Yeah, you are right. It may take time for people who don't use the internet to get used to this updating crap.

No, it clicks after it has completely shut off.

If you think it's the HDD, put the 60gb back and see what happens. if you still get that sound then it's probably not the HDD.

A friend of mine told me that it is the relays that are making the noise. Thanks to everyone who responded to this post.

At least you know what the problem is. Does it require repair?
