Default Downloading content during Blu-ray playback...

OK, I just got a PS3 today along with Mission: Impossible 3 on Blu-ray. So I set up my account on the Playstation Network and went to the store to look at their downloads. I am currently downloading the Iron Man demo game, but when I play M:I3 it seems to pause the download even though I told the download to be in the background when I first started it in the store.

So does BD playback (or any other video playback including games) cause downloads to pause? If so, I believe I have found my first minor complaint with the PS3. So far it's been pretty awesome.

When you watch a DVD or Blu-Ray is pauses the download

Does not pause the download when:

Watching Divx, Mpeg or Music etc:

Tip: You can watch Pictures etc while listening to Music Etc

Start your music, then hit the PS button on the remote/controller. This will bring you back to the XMB w/o exiting the player.

Go to Photo and hit Start to start the slideshow.

Also, when in Photo/Music/Video, Square changes Group by options. Triangle will bring up the submenu screen.

The PS Buttons is very useful and the options Button.

There are many tweaks for your blu ray and DVD playback.. enjoy!

Thanks for the tips. So does it pause downloads during games as well or is it only during BD/DVD playback? Thanks.

I think it pauses during games too, can't remember TBH.

You need to check out the "earth" visulisation during music playback, it's way cool

Can you play music during gameplay? I bought this mainly for BD playback. I already have a 360 and I am not really that much of a gamer, but I will probably get Gran Turismo when it comes out because I had it for PS2 and it was awesome back then so I am sure the new one will be great. I'm mostly a sports gamer. In fact, the only game I've played in the last 6 months or so on my 360 is Tiger Woods '07, even though my parents gave me Tiger Woods '08 for Christmas. I just haven't had time for it or anything and I've already got my attributes high enough that it's good to just hop on there and play a round or two as relaxation.

I think if the game has an online feature then it will pause the download, but games without online features it will download in the background.

Some do, the majority (when I had one) didn't. Custom soundtracks have been in the SDK for some time now tho, so it might becoming more commonplace.

When you play a movie, it logs you off the network. That's why your downloads pause while playing a movie. If you play a game, it doesn't log you off and you can continue downloading while playing.

OK cool. Thanks for the explanation. Now another question regarding downloads. If you turn the PS3 off in the middle of a download, does it cancel it or pause it and start where it left off the next time you turn the console on? Thanks. Reason I ask this is because I was seriously considering turning it off but I decided to wait for the download because I was afraid it would cancel it. It was around a gig download and I was getting fairly impatient with it.

it pauses it but I wish it was like the 360, when you turn it off it would continue downloading until it finished.

sony kinda dropped the ball in the online aspects of the ps3... it disconnects randomly, using wireless tends to disagree with certain routers (the very common Linksys WRT54G being one) kicking all other connections off sometimes even requiring a power cycling of the router (dd-wrt firmware or putting the ps3 in a dmz are the only known reliable fixes outside of running the ps3 through a wired connection to the router), downloads pause while watching a bluray or dvd movie... also connecting to media servers is hit or miss

most of these issues could be fixed through firmware updates... the wireless issue is a maybe

A new issue I've discovered is a problem with the Dark Knight 1080p WMV trailers at the Warner Brothers website. The PS3 plays the video just fine but the audio will not play at all. Apparently the PS3 doesn't play WMA 10 audio but will play WMA 9 or lower. The Cell is amazing yet Sony has some of its strength restricted. Another awkward problem is that the PS3 will not play MOV files. Very strange. I'm very surprised that WMV's are more supported than MOV's, but more importantly it sucks that neither one is fully supported.
