Default My PS3 Died!

My Blu Ray Drive went out on my PS3 today.......Anyone else have a problem with this? I bought it mostly for Blu Ray movies and don't play many games on it. Just wondering.

I had that happen back in February. It was a 60GB model. If you have the same problem that I did, then your hard drive is still fine and any digital content you have still plays straight off the console, but it won't read Blu-Rays, DVDs or even CDs, correct?

If that's the case, then it's a "Fatal Error," as Sony's customer service describes it. You have three options. Take advantage of your in-store warranty if you bought one, take advantage of Sony's 1 year warranty if it's still valid, or be creative, buy a Blu-Ray drive for the PS3 off eBay and install that yourself. I know at least one person that's done this, but that was because he was a gamer and wanted to avoid to losing his game data.

Get a new PS3 from Walmart for the Fathers day sale or better yet get a stand alone BD player.

I bought a 40GB PS3 back in late November 2007, and the drive in it died in April 2008. I also used it primarily for Blu-ray playback, and a couple games. Had to send it back to Sony for replacement. Turnaround for me was about 10 days from the day I called.

The XBOX 360 I bought in December 2006 still works great, so go figure.

I called Sony and they are sending me a coffin........its still under warranty. I'm on my 3rd xbox so I'm acustomed to this process.......it just sucks because I just bought 3 Blu Ray movies this weekend and intended to watch them. Is the PS3 reliable or do they have a high failure rate like the xbox? Just wondering.

I'm sure he really appreciates that obscure fanboy remark after the Walmart mention.

Mine actually just died yesterday. I was playing GTA 4 and it froze, so I hit the switch in the back not knowing I wasn't supposed to do that and it refuses to read any media now. I called Sony and now I'm waiting on the email.

You can get the game data off the hard drive with a USB flash drive. I bought my PS3 off Amazon.com and purchased a 3 year extended warranty. For $50 it wasn't a bad deal.

Why are you not suppose to hit the switch in the back ? What are you suppose to do when you get a hard freeze ?

Sorry to hear about your blu ray drive going kaput. This is exactly the reason why I don't play movies in my PS3 anymore and just use it for gaming nowadays.
I have the LG Combo player now; got it for 399.99 here in Canada. I suggest buying that player if you just want blu-ray movie playback. It's fantastic.

But that is the only reason why some people bought a PS3, to play movies. Because the stand-alones were more expensive and non-upgradeable profile 1.0.

I recently got the BDP-S300 but have only watched a couple BDs on it. I got my 60GB PS3 December 2006 & have had 0 problems so far. My count of watched BD discs on the PS3 so far is 457 btw.

You're supposed to press the power button on the front. Keep your finger depressed on it for several seconds and this will do a soft reset of the console. You'll know you did it right when you hear a series of beeps coming from the PS3 and it begins to shut itself down.

ahhh.... I think that I have only had one hard freeze a long time ago and turned it off in the back.

I have had a few times when I shut if off that it beeps differently. Some type of error code but it boots normaly and shuts down normaly the next time. I only have Motorstorm and use it 99% for BD.
