Yes your bluetooth headset will work. A bluetooth keyboard and mouse will also work. You have to go into the system settings and activate the bluetooth finder, then activate your device. It will find your device and that will be the end of that.

My rep also confirmed you'll be able to use an external USB HDD if you require more space. This makes sense given you can use a USB key.

Blimey - when I said initial thoughts, I didn't expect a full blown report! Nice one Elder! That was a very interesting read!

As illegalprelude said, you've hyped me to 11!

Quick question: Will the PS3 be using emulation to run PS/PS2 software or is the actual hardware built in?

Well for your discs I believe it's hardware and software because if it was software alone, you'd be abel to download PS1 games and play them on the PS3 right out of the box, which you can't. I think the software hasn't been perfected yet so they're going to go game by game. Fear not though, every one of your PS1/2 games will work on your PS3.

Which will be nice to know, especially since it's not so easy on the 360. MS take note!

The next time I get my hands on the system I'll try an early PS1 game like FFVII and an early PS2 game like Oni or something weird like that. I'm curious to see just how far the backwards compat goes. Sony says they'll all work so I want to put this to the test.

I also want to test out an external HDD and a few Bluetooth devices. They talked a lot about these features but I didn't get to try many different things myself. The same can be said of the online features. Once we have the 100% final system it'll be nice to mess around with the billions of features it comes shipped with.

keep the questions coming.

Man, the only Bluetooth device I own is a Palm Tugeston E2 pda. I wonder if I could use that as Blu-ray remote using some custom software. That could be pretty sweet.

Elder I am very gald you are here and providing us with all this intel. Can I change your title to something like "PS3 guru" or "PS3 informant". Let me know!

Random Facts off the Japanse PS3 site

Q: What's the PS3 system color?

A: The current model is Clear Black only. We're looking into future color variations.

Q: How much power does the system consume?

A: At most, about 380 W (60GB and 20GB)

Q: Can you use PlayStation and PS2 controllers on the PS3?

A: You can't.

Q:How many SIXAXIS wireless controllers can be connected simultaneously?

A: Using Bluetooth wireless communication technology, up to 7 people can play simultaneously.

Q:Can you charge the SIXAXIS during play?

A: Yes

Q:Can you replace the SIXAXIS wireless controller battery?

A: The battery is made to be removable for when recycling it. Do not remove the screws aside from when recycling the battery.

Q:If you use the Memory Card Adapter, can you copy save data from the PS3 hard disk to a Memory Card?

A: The save data on the PS3 hard disk can't be copied to memory card using the memory card adapter. (Note that you can exchange data back and forth between memory card formats like SD and Memory Stick)

Q:Can you expand the 20 Gigabyte model with Wireless LAN after purchase?

A: Not currently.

Q: Can you play back CPRM DVDs?

A: Yes (CPRM is a form of copyright protection)

Q: Can you record television programs to the PS3 HDD?

A: The PS3 does not have a tuner and so cannot record television broadcasts to the HDD.

Q:What other languages can you set for language output?

A: From the settings menu, you can select Japanese, English, Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish for display and character input. You can also set Korean for display.

So there you go! Portuguese support from day one!

We'll also point the thing about the 20 Gig model not being upgradeable with Wireless LAN at launch. This will presumably change in the future, but for the time being, the only way to use the PSP as a remote media player will be to have the 60 Gig model.

If you have the ability to change my title to something, go for it

As for your PDA, I honestly have no idea what will and won't work on the PS3. Right now Sony's being VERY quiet on the subject.

I'm here to help everyone out. I've been in the industry for a very long time and I personally think most of you will be impressed by the PS3 whenever you get one. I believe that Sony's purposely being quiet on the PS3 because they can't afford to hype the machine right now. Let's face facts here, 200 million people have bought a PlayStation. Now if even a fraction of those people get overly excited for a PS3, how can they get one? By keeping mute on the PS3, they'll get all the hardcore audience and the rest will come later on.

Look at what just happened in Japan. Sony announced only 80,000 units will be ready for day 1 in Japan instead of their previous 100,000. Now back in 2000 when the PS2 launched there were 1 million ready for day 1 and there were riots in Japan. Don't be surprised if the Japanese government steps in and forces Sony to delay the PS3 in Japan. I think the PlayStation brand has become a bit too big for its own good. Sony really needs something like 5 million consoles on day 1 per region if they really want to market this thing to their fanbase. 200 million people guys, that's a LOT of people.

I like "PS3 informant" the best. I may lengthen that to "PlayStation3 informant".
Let me know if you can think of something better.

EDIT
Well my powers are not as strong as I thought. I can change all of your profile options but I can only save changes to your signature, avatar and profile picture.

Sorry.

Elder

Any insight on whether or not the PS3 will support native 1080p24 output for BD movies?

Thanks

I didn't realise it was as high as 1m in 2000. With only 80k units it looks very likley that the already delayed European launch may get pushed back further...

According to Sony, it has the highest possible output for BD movies so I assume the answer is yes to that question.

As for the 80,000 number in Japan, yes...this is going to be ugly.

Another question, with HDMI 1.3, do we have to get a HDMI 1.3 cord? or is it just the output from the PS3 thats HDMI 1.3?
