PS3 HDMI port failure
Hey guys, though I don't post often on here, I am a constant lurker. I thought I'd share my misery.
3 days before Christmas, my PS3's HDMI port stopped displaying video. Luckily, it's still under warranty so I will get a replacement, but I was pretty anxious to play Uncharted and watch Lost, both of which I received on Christmas day. Ya I could play them with composite, but come on, you guys understand right? This is after all high-def digest lol.
So just in case anyone's machine has a similar affliction, here's what happened-
Let me preface by saying that the PS3 is hooked up to my tv with an HDMI-DVI cable since I have an older 1080i television. Hadn't even turned on the PS3 all day, but I noticed while watching cable TV that the picture was jumping and causing some strange interference.
At first I thought it was a loose cable so I turned everything off and reseated all the cables. Oddly enough, at this point the Playstation 3 still showed video fine and I was perplexed because there was no interference at all. However, all the other inputs on the TV were having the same interference. After a while it settled down, but there was still a darkened line crawling up the screen. I found that if I unplugged the PS3's HDMI cable, the line went away. And then when I tried to fire up the PS3, nothing but blackness.
Crawled up in the attic and found the PS3 box with the composite A/V cables and reset the PS3's video settings once it was plugged in and got standard definition just fine. Tried replugging in the HDMI cable and changing to that output and nothing. Tried my DVR on my HDMI connection and it worked fine. For the final test, I went to my neighbor's house, unhooked his PS3, put mine on his connections and nothing.
So there's my sob story. I thought I'd share. What's interesting is I've found one obscure reference to someone having a similar issue right out of the box but never on a machine that was working fine for 10 months. Of course the Sony reps say they've never heard of such a thing, but who knows. Anyone else had this problem before?
Sorry for rambling, guess I'm making up for not posting all these months. -

Yeah, I'm also having this problem with my PS3, I can't seem to get video over HDMI onto my dell 2407. I was able to get it before and when I was changing the cables over from PC to PS3 I didn't get any video, only white noise that kept flickering a whole lot.
I tried a different cable: Same deal
I can get it to output in component fine but I don't know if it's the PS3 itself or it's my display. The funny thing is is that the PS3 can still detect the HDMI device but yet I get nothing.
I really want to try another HDMI-ready device like an XBOX 360 Elite or something to see if the display still works because I'm thinking it's the HDCP chip that's busted. I don't really have another display to test the PS3 on but I guess my last real viable option is to get the HD Fury that converts the digital signal into analog and have it over VGA instead of DVI-D.My HDM (223) (Latest: Lord of the Rings Extended Edit., Star Wars The Complete Saga (US))

Personally, I really don't want to accept the possibility that the HDMI port on the PS3 may be busted. I think my next move is to get the HD Fury

and see if that helps. My HDM (223) (Latest: Lord of the Rings Extended Edit., Star Wars The Complete Saga (US))

The Solution!!!
I had the same issue with my PS3. I went and exchanged it at Best Buy, but when I plugged in the new PS3 via the hdmi cable, nothing. I had tested the hdmi cable with a cable box so I knew it worked.
I searched the internet and found this...
Here is the fix: Unplug your TV and let it think for a little while about how hard it's made your life (I don't know if unplugging the hdmi would make any difference), plug your TV back in (with the hdmi cable already hooked up), voila, your PS3's hdmi is working again. Pretty nifty eh? -

I'm not sure if this is related to you guys problem, but it should be known to all PS3 owners.
When you switch back and forth from HDMI to component, the PS3 will still be outputting the video from the previous conection... So if you had your video output via HDMI and then connect your PS3 to a different TV via component, your screen will be blank... The same will happen if you go from component to HDMI.
The quick and easy fix is a hard reset of the PS3 which will reset your AV output.
To do this switch off the PS3 in the back, before you switch it back on hold the power button in the front, continue holding the power button in the front while you switch back on the PS3 for about 10 secs, you will hear 3 beeps and the system will shut back off.
When you turn it back on, the AV output will be reset.PC: i7 920, 6GB RAM, SLI 570

Well, I'm just gonna have to buy a new HDTV to test for sure rather than getting all these little things like the HD Fury (I'm still waiting on my VISA debit card to arrive) or a 360 elite, though I may upgrade in the future, when I can use that money to go into a new TV and display cabinet.
Looking to get the low res model cos I don't think there's a diff between 720p and 1080p on a 40" HDTV...I'll save 1080p for the future. My HDM (223) (Latest: Lord of the Rings Extended Edit., Star Wars The Complete Saga (US))

To all future internet wanderers that read this,
I leave this message in hope of assisting whoever encountered the same problem as me.
For the record, the method described by Scrotor managed to fix my problem. Alternatively, power cycling the display (in my case, a ViewSonic monitor) may work for you (worked for me).
My PS3's symptoms were : No output from using HDMI port using a HDMI to DVI cable on monitor (outputting audio via AV cable) after updating firmware to 4.11 - still able to hear audio from AV cable though. Tried using a new cable, still blank. Tried using another monitor - blank. Tried resetting the display settings blind, still blank. Tried holding power button for 5 secs for a beep(display settings reset), blank. Tried outputting video from AV cable - I can see stuff, so the AV cable port works. Tried system restore from safe mode and went back to HDMI - blank. Tried Scrotor's method - lo and behold, I can see stuff in 1080p again. I am close to throwing my ps3 out of the window - I spent an entire day buying cables and lugging monitors trying to fix this problem, and the solution is so simple. Thanks Scrotor, you're awesome.
Anyway, try that, hope it works out for you. -

Miracle fix isn't working for me
I tried to do the method below that seems to have worked for everyone else, however I can't get it to work. I had my PS3 hooked up to my TV, and during a lightning storm, my TV went out... not sure what happened with it but it just went out.
I hooked the PS3 up to another TV (one I used before we upgraded) put I couldn't get the HDMI output to show anything. I reset to use AV output and I've got audio and video.
I plugged the HDMI cable into the TV, unplugged the AV cables and unplugged the TV for a little while. I plugged it back in and nothing. I switched back to AV and it said an HDMI unit had been detected, do you want to switch the display to HDMI? I thought it was fixed finally, so I picked yes, switched to HDMI.... but nothing!?! No signal still.
It's so frustrating, I thought I had it using this method... but it's still not working. Can you guys think of anything else I can do? I called tech support, they walked me through about 6 different thing to try and in the end said send it in and we'll have to take a look at it.
Thanks,
