WD Live TV and Apple TV3 are probably the 2 best media streamers out in the $100 price range. Once they jailbreak the ATV3, it will be even better. Even if you get all your files working, the PS3 media interface sucks and is not intuitive at all.

I use Freemake Video Converter and i recon its better than most mkv converters you can convert 1080p and change the frame rate, i recently converted The Avengers to 59.94fps and i could tell the difference much smoother and better.

I use Xvid4PSP to convert any MKV to a compatible MP4 format for the PS3, and it doesn't lose that much quality either.
Of course all of this is meaningless when you can do it all on a PC hook up to your main HDTV where you can watch and stream anything you want. I don't understand why people buy useless crap like Apple TV or stream boxes when it's so easy and simply to hook up a laptop or a PC with internet and stream or play anything you want.
I always use my PC for that.

Stream boxes are useful due to the small size and HDMI connection. Most people don't have room in their entertainment center for a PC or laptop, and it's a pain to have to hook up and disconnect a laptop every time you want to watch something (not to mention some people have no way of connecting their laptop if it doesn't have HDMI, plus many times I'll be on my laptop while I'm watching something). So the best option is either a stream box or make room for a HTPC.

For the average user, that is a very cumbersome solution. I have a PC hooked to my TV and the wife hates it. I can't justify spending $100 on a good wireless keyboard with a trackpad when I can get a little streamer that will play all my files for the same price, with a better UI, and less draw on my electric.
I am currently waiting for the ATV3 to be jailbroken or something better to come out.
