I use Xilisoft converter. Supports over 150 video formats. I have used it to convert HD files so that I can play it on my PS3 or iPhone. They are having a sale right now and you can use coupon code xjz3457548 for an additional 15% off on all the converter on their website.

People pay money for softwares like that? I would use PS3Muxer for mkv files. It's the best muxer out there for muxing mkv files to ps3 compatible files.

Maybe you could get iFunia MKV converter to do a favor for you, which can convert MKV to most popular video/audio formats, and the proper formats playable on PS3, iPad, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, and other MP4 Player etc. I got it and tried, found it is really more stable and multifunctional than other video converter programs.

Isn't the whole point of this topic is to figure out how to convert an mkv file without re-compressing it?

Wooooow this is a necro thread and a half.
Download Playstation Media Server and stream it to your console, it plays all my formats of all files no problem, including MKV, and it works on both my PS3 and my Xbox.

XL83, I've been using PS3 Media Server and it works great, but it lags when I try to play big mkv files. I know it won't be able to handle transcoding huge (30GB) 1080p files wirelessly, but it even lags when I'm trying to play certain 720p videos that are 2GB or smaller. Did you have to modify any settings to play mkvs smoothly?

Edit: FYI, I tried using wireless for PS3 media server and it will lag if either or both connections are wireless even if I'm streaming a small file. To stream smoothly, you need a wired connection to the router for both. It doesn't matter if you're streaming to a PS3 or another media player like WD Live. I've tried both and wireless lags for both media players.

If its an mkv that you legally own (not that I'm implying you don't), I recommend using tsmuxer to break down the mkv file into either blu-ray format or AVCHD format and creating a physical disk. This way you don't take up several gigabytes worth of space on your hard drive. Blu-ray disks are still pretty expensive, so the best bet would probably be to go with AVCHD.
