in the end, if the studios intended for the the movie to be 5.1 pcm then they wanted you to experience it that way. Audiophiles would probably agree with me on thisI really thought the 705 had the capability to matrix 5.1 to 7.1 pcm but i guess only the 805 can do this. Besides, the rear surrounds if matrixed would only yield mono sound anyway

I've noticed that with THX modes on the SR705 turned on, the volume appears lower. I have to turn the audio up. From what I can hear, it also lowers the bass.

If I understand what Romeo is saying, it can matrix 7.1 in certain listening modes, but he doesn't want the extra sound processing. The 7.1 channels should be matrixed from the L and R surround channels to enchance the surround effect.

I say keep playing with the settings on both the PS3 and your receiver. Maybe try to post on AVS to see if someone there has the same receiver as you.

If the game or movie was encoded with 5.1 you'll only get sound out of 5 speakers and your sub; unless you set your receiver to alter the sound to output in 7.1. This is why I haven't bothered to add more speakers to my system beacuse they will not be utilized unless I have the reciever mess with the audio. This is sort of similar as upconverting a DVD.

Here's the deal...

PS3 set to PCM output. Onkyo SR705 is picking up "PCM MULTICH HDMI". Now, no matter what movie I put in that has PCM uncompressed audio, the rear two channels of my 7.1 setup do not put out any sound. If I throw on other receiver listening modes such as THX Select2, I hear the rears. Yet choosing "Multich" listening mode, which I thought is what is supposed to be set to get true uncompressed audio, only my center, fronts, and sides output audio.

So guys, what gives? Am I just ignorant and missing something?
THis is exaclty why im holding out on getting this reciever. Im seeing to many issues with onkyo models. although, I was browsing Onkyos website and there is a firmware update availaible. its supposed to cover these issues.

Default Same experience

My receiver Yamaha RX-V633 and PS3 behave the same way. It detect 5.1 LPCM but can't make all my 7.1 speaker sound (the 2's rear are off). My speakers are in the permanent position (7.1), so it'll difficult to move my side surround to the rear just to make my system become 5.1.

The strange, when I just set the LCPM down to 2 Channel/stereo, I can get more options soundfield, (I choose neo 6) and all of my 7.1 speakers sound greatly.

By this, when I got a 5.1 LCPM then I set my LCPM to 2 channel/stereo only and I'll set my LCPM 7.1 when lately I got a real 7.1 LCPM (which is I believe rare right now).

Strange 2, when I push "select" on PS3 (the LCPM is set to 2/stereo) my LCD TV shows info that the LCPM was 5.1. Its the same happen when the LCPM is set to 5.1 or auto.

I have a 705 as well and as far as I know, the only way to get sound from the rear speakers in a non 7.1 soundtrack is to run audio processing, ie: thx select, plxii etc. If you have your speakers connected correctly, the "surrounds" are the side speakers and the "rear surrounds" are the back speakers. So a 5.1 track will have no sound coming from the two rear channels.

Check out 3:10 to Yuma. I'm pretty sure that's a 7.1 PCM soundtrack.

PS. Be careful bitstreaming with a 705 unless you have done the DSP and firmware updates on it. It has a pretty nasty DTS bomb with some films.
