Default 'Bridge to Terabithia' - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Peter's review of 'Bridge to Terabithia.' He says a solid transfer, a great soundtrack and nice batch of supplements make this one an easy recommend. </p>

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the review. Please note the name of this title is "Bridge To Terabithia", not "Bridge To Terebithia".

Cheers,

WFC

I'm definitely going to pick up this title.

I would like to confirm one thing...the video portion of the review. This title got 4 stars instead of 4.5 or 5 stars because the reviewer disagreed with the director's vision of how the film should look?

You expected something else from Peter Bracke?

The forum post does, but the actual review and associated links are/were spelt incorrectly (review title now fixed, thanks). But the HTML still need attention.

To each his own but......4 stars for the movie????? This movie is like a bad Hallmark movie that you see every now and then on a Sunday night on the local channels! I saw this movie with my family with a certain idea of what to expect, thanks to the trailer on tv. The trailer for this movie is MISLEADING to say the least. It was nothing what I had expected. Peter, I value your reviews and view points but you are WAY off base with this one, imho. I could not get out of the theater fast enough. Even my kids did not like it.

Thats the same thing I thought. "but contrast runs a bit too hot, which bolsters depth to the image at the expense of realism..." Maybe the director wanted the film to appear this way. This is why I take take reviews from this site with a grain or 10 of salt.

I disagree, the movie was good and way beyond the level of "kids" movies.

Peter always takes down the movie score for not liking how the director wanted it to look. I like his PQ revirews usually but I take that into consideration every time I read his reviews. IMHO and from my observation Peter is definatley a HD DVD fanboy

Here's my two cents as well as the logic I apply to my video reviews:

A video rating should incorporate any visual element that leads to a viewer's enjoyment or dissatisfaction with the look of a film. Without a direct line of communication to the filmmakers, it's impossible to determine whether contrast, saturation, and other factors are intentional or a fault of the transfer's production value and tweaking. As a result, we have to report on every element of the picture and allow you to decide if our comments match the rating we've selected.

Following the logic some of you have applied to the situation, I could argue a poorly compressed transfer was an intentional decision by the director because he wanted to leave more room on a disc for special features. In reality, everyone would criticize a transfer with heavy artifacting regardless of the filmmaker's intention.

I appreciate your posts, so please don't think I'm attempting to stir up trouble. I simply want all of you to know that we're coming from a solid review philosiphy that has an internal logic (Peter's not, as someone said, an HD DVD fanboy -- as evidenced by a variety of high & low visual ratings for HD DVD releases). Plus if you notice, reviews that contain these criticisms still have very high video ratings. We congratulate and prioritize the integrity of a transfer much more heavily than we penalize a director's possible intentions.

You may not agree with a particular rating, but that's why we provide such a clear description of our thoughts. This way, you can judge whether the things that annoyed our eyes would annoy yours. Plus, these message boards allow everyone to participate in the feedback. Rather than arguing the logic of a rating, it's more beneficial to other readers to explain how you would rate the video in your opinion.

In the end, I'm confident that our comments still allow you to make a very educated decision based on a series of detailed facts -- whether you agree with our interpretation of those facts or not.

Thanks as always for posting! It's exciting to see how passionate all of you are for cinema and its high-def presentation!

This reviewer also gave 'Apocalypto' 4 stars out of 5. 'Apocalypto' is clearly one of the best looking high def titles out there.

He also gave Black Christmas 4 stars on pq because he didnt like the lighting, even though it was intentional.
