studios don't use the 50gb they have, and would never fill up an even larger disc.
    they are far too greedy.
    we all know that.

Well, also, it's a business first. Most businesses want to go for the cheaper price-point, which is understandable. And, I believe, if discs went to 100GB, they would be paying 10+/- cents or so more per disc, which adds up.

i'd love to see some 100gb's out there, though, to fit huge sets on 1-2 discs WITHOUT compression problems. to eliminate the need that is still out there for extras on a 2nd disc. it'd clear shelf room from going away from multi pack boxes, and one has to wonder cost of 2 bd50s vs 1 bd100, when taking away the extra cost of a 2 disc case instead of 1 (i know, same plastic, but popularity effects pricing as well, common use).

I still remember during the format war the blu fanboys posting in smackdown about all these mythical 100, 200, 300 and whatever GB Blu-Ray discs. I always knew these would not be used by the studios and its nice to finally hear a BDA exec clear that up. The studios aren't interested in these discs regardless of player compatabilty because they like multi-disc sets. Consumers will cough up $40-60 for a season of a TV show on 3 or 4 discs. Make it one disc and suddenly people don't see the value.

Anything past 50GB will likely be used in professional data storage type applications. Backup solutions using large capacity BD discs would be very cool.

Damn, I was hoping for VGs or seasons of television taking advantage of it. Oh well, as it stands at the moment there isn't any problem with the 50gb.

Just wait until Walmart hears about all this and decides to try and force the industry to these larger capacity discs, so that they can cut down on the size of season box set packaging so that:

    A) They can say they're going more green by offering the same content in a smaller package, and;

    B) They can fit more stuff on the shelf for you to buy.

Then again, Walmart's Blu-ray offerings are abysmal.

    Default Backup Discs

Just thought Id throw it out there?

I agree that there is no real need for 320gb discs for commercial use, Like mentioned before there are not many films using the full capacity.

I would really like to see the 320gb discs for computer backups though.

Now that would be good, Entire music collection on one disc. (I mean it would probably take a month to burn) but it would be good..

    HD content from internet etc..

There could be some use for 100GB size discs in the future (ie 3D) but they make little sense today since most movies fit easily onto a 50GB disc with video codecs like VC1 and AVC and audio codecs like DTS-HD-MA and TrueHD.

So I guess no complete Hitchcocks or complete John Fords on a single disc. Too bad.

sort of agree, but i think the real problem is that there isn't enough bandwidth on bd to back up a 100+ GB read only bluray movie disc. sort of like 30 GB was the sweet spot for hd dvd

I actually see it happening for VG's next gen. Well I see it happening for breathing room and just imagine if we could fill get some RPG collections aside from the Phantasy Star Collection on the GBA and Saturn.
Heck right now with the PS3's capacity we might be able to fit a Shadow Hearts Collection on one disc, maybe including "Koudelka". I truly don't see why it hasn't been taken advantage of except they'd have to stick it on the PS3, no choice in regards to having it on the 360 given the discs.
HD DVD, the best in extras!

what about bandwith though? can u fit 2 1080p video streams + lossless audio + speacial features in to blurays bandwidth?

Maybe ... but effectively prolly not, video bit rate maxes out at 40Mbit (according to wiki).

I'm not sure what you're getting at with your comment above though ("there isn't enough bandwidth on bd to back up a 100+ GB read only bluray movie disc")? If bandwidth is relating to data throughput, the only thing you'd need is more time? (unless I'm miss-understand your meaning ... wouldn't be the 1st time would it ... )
