Default 'The Haunted World of El Superbeasto' - High-Def Digest Review

Nate has reviewed 'The Haunted World of El Superbeasto.' He says this isn't for everyone, but he's definitely in the target audience. This Blu-ray has middling video and audio and a disappointingly sparse bunch of extras. Give it a rent first.

How's the animation style on this one? It's impossible to tell looking at the pictures...

Does this look like one of those new cartoons that feel like they were made on Flash for the web, or is it a more "taken care" of, like a Don Bluth film or the animation sequences of Cool World, or, totally look like your standard animation for TV (think The Simpsons, Family Guy...)

From those, I truly hate the first ones I mentioned. That style looks truly cheap, IMO.

it doesn't look like flash at all. it's gritty, not too glamorous, and lines, hoo-ah, they ain't straight or even, ever.

I would love to see Ralph Bakshi comment on this film. I'd bet he'd love it.

I'd suggest anyone rent or borrow this film before buying it, as it's more likely to take up shelf space than it is to constantly find its way into players, even if I find the film to be a real masterpiece.
If you consider the film to be a masterpiece, which is certainly your right, why did you rate it only 3.5 out of 5 stars?

a masterpiece in its own right, and the first good fucked up cartoon in some time, but in 2 days i viewed it 3x (1x for review, 1x for bg as i was writing, and 1x for the animatic), and as fun as it was, it did wear thin after a while. while a few songs have stuck in my head since then, for the most part, it's just like Fritz: brilliant, edgy (possibly too edgy, ie trying too hard), and a staple of its respective genre, but still not perfect.

it's one of those films where you want to see it again when it's over if you enjoyed it, but when you do, it will make far less of an impression.

you could also say because i'm a hardass when it comes to grading films, Chad. (your shit shipped yesterday). i'm fine w/ that label.

From the trailers, it looks to me basically identical to Comedy Central's "Drawn Together".

If memory serves, this was animated by Spumco, the team behind Ren & Stimpy. If you've seen that show, you know what to expect. I managed to catch this in theaters and missed half of it cause of the audience laughter, and loved seeing it again on Blu. This will definitely keep finding its way back to the player, but it is definitely not for everyone. Good job with the review!

All right, so animation-wise, it's Drawn Together meets Ren & Stimpy?

That combo is appealing to me, as I was a big fan of R&S, so I'm picturing something like the new adult-oriented episodes of Ren & Stimpy. Yeah, most surely I'm buying it for Christmas, along 10 or 11 other BDs I've been waiting paciently to get.

Thanks for that!

I'd say Ren and Stimpy is a pretty accurate parallel, animation wise, yeah.

Yes, if it's not done by Spumco, it looks just like their stuff. Another good comparison would be that Tenacious D animated music video, "**** Her Gently."

The movie is awesome - it's what Cool World should have been. It has that bouncy, wild, musical feel, but it actually takes the risks that Cool World wouldn't. The art style is generally more appealing too.

The only things I didn't like were Dr. Satan's rampage (a tad too offensive for me) and the hillybilly characters from Rob Zombie's other movies, but none of that detracted much.
