Default 'Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins' - High-Def Digest Review

Nate has reviewed 'Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins.' He was pleasantly surprised by this family film. This Blu-ray has average video and audio and just a light selection of extras, but all in all, this should appeal to kids. For Scooby addicts and kids alike!

I was a fan of the first two films, and any films written by James Gunn (he also wrote Troma's Tromeo and Juliet, the Dawn of the Dead remake, then wrote and directed Slither). The first two were full of in-jokes for people that really knew their Scooby, people that grew up with Scooby and are adults now. The casting wasn't perfect, mainly Fred and Daphne could have been better cast, but I enjoyed them. The second even had some references to things from "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" which I found to be the funniest series in the Scooby world because it was a parody of the cliches created by the original cartoons. It was also a cartoon in the true sense, with eye-bugging reactions and other such cartoony touches, something the other versions of Scooby mostly lacked. Cartoony stuff was also something that wasn't seen very often from the 60's until Ren and Stimpy took over, but this was cartoony before Ren and Stimpy fully revived the style. That was also the last time Scooby was voiced by his original voice actor, Don Messick. This bugs me if for no other reason than the fact that it re-writes the history that was covered by the prequel cartoon series. Their first meeting, first Scooby Snack, etc. were all covered in a much funnier way in "A Pup Named Scooby Doo". While the first two films showed that they had studied their Scooby, this seems to ignore its past altogether. It was on Cartoon Network and just contradicted too many things that I've come to think of as part of the characters' history. Yeah maybe I know too much about Scooby, but at least the first two movies played to people that did.

one of my daytime customers who has a young (6 to 10) kid asked if i'd seen Scooby, on the same day the review got published. apparently he and the kid liked it, too, and they wanted to see this show get a weekly episodic treatment.

not a bad idea, though i doubt it'd ever happen. still, the views for the CN on the broadcast of this movie shows there's a real interest...

wow, this thread got all dusty and shit fast.

here's one to spice it back up:

too bad Thumb Wars already used the phrase: THE PHANTOM CUTICLE, as that'd be brilliant here.

thumb wars.....god, just bringing that up in a post mentioning that story is just wrong.
