Default 'The Girl Next Door: Unrated' - High-Def Digest Review

Aaron has reviewed 'The Girl Next Door.' He says this is an oddly entertaining flick that wasn't what he was expecting from the marketing. The spirit of John Hughes inhabits this teen comedy. This Blu-ray has disappointing video, ok audio, and few extras. Overall, this is worth a look.

This is a well written review. I'd probably give the movie about a 3.5 though. Sure, it has a few flaws, but its always entertaining; no matter how many times I re-watch it. Plus, Emile Hirsch and Timothy Olyphant are perfectly cast as the foils for one another. Its just hilarious to watch Timothy Olyphant be all nice one minute, and then smack Emile Hirsch across the head the next minute.

Sadly though, the transfer on this does indeed suck nuts. Kind of like I said in the Gladiator thread....you want to see what a bad HD transfer really looks like? Check out this movie then.

Oh, and Elisha Cuthbert has never looked better than she did in this movie....

The transfer is not a "great example of what a bad transfer looks like." It's definitely not perfect - but is definitely about 3 or 3.5 out of 5.

As for the movie - it is by far my favorite comedy (along with Role Models and Knocked Up). Emile Hirsch is awesome, Elisha Cuthbert is gorgeous, and the movie just rocks.

Sorry, this transfer doesn't even deserve a 2.5.

I'd give it a 1.5 tops.

Just popped it in again - I take back the 3.5 after a second look and am in more agreement with an average score of around 2.5 - 3.0.....

Biggie - 1.5? C'mon....

I'm just saying...comparative in years...I think Gladiator, which came out in 2000, looks better than "The Girl Next Door", which came out in 2004. The newer movie should look better than the older film almost every time (unless its the director's intent for it too look crappy).

I agree, it definitely looks much older than it actually is.

I agree to a certain extent....I think with comedies, I am a bit more forgiving...I mean, I am not expecting my breath to be taken away (as I would be with Braveheart or a big action epic).

Totally understand what you are saying....

It was a must buy - I love the movie...

wait...it's by far your favorite comedy...but along with two others?

ill keep my dvd but i think this is a great comedy that has very good performances from it's actors (hirsch, dano, olymphant) and plenty of great quotes and laugh out loud moments. this was the first movie i saw emile hirsch and paul dano in and i remember how shocked i was when i first head they were casted in serious dramas like alpha dog and there will be blood. flash forward to today and emile hirsch is in my favorite actors list with his great performances and paul dano is on my impressive and look out for actor list.

I agree with the review of the movie - could have been much worse, but in the end a likeably decent little teen comedy. Not a must buy, but an enjoyable watch here and there.

This was a total waste of close to $30, in my opinion anyway, and I usually like this type of movie. The picture and sound are good enough, but not the movie.

I see Amazon is selling it cheap now. Trying to dump them I guess. ($14.49)

And...I guess you missed the point of this movie. Its not supposed to be one of "those types of movies." Its not a typical teen sex comedy. Fantastic movie...well worth $14.99.

yeah...I'm pretty sure I paid $15 on day one...I'm not 100%, but I know I didn't pay more than $19 from Amazon.

$30, where are you shopping? This was cheap from the very beginning, I mean we aren't talking about Disney/Miramax catalog pricing.
