Default 'Lost: The Complete Second Season' - High-Def Digest Review

Josh has reviewed 'Lost: The Complete Second Season.' He says the second season is arguably the series' weakest, but it's still 'Lost(!)' and a critical part of the series' mythology. This Blu-ray set is stunning, with fantabulous video and audio, and a hearty collection of extras. Highly recommended.

'Lost' is simply great television. If this is the show's worst, it stands at a level higher than almost any other show's best."
Agreed there.

I am definitely going to pick this up on Blu-Ray. I was forced to watch Season 1+2 on DVD Cannot wait to go back and watch this whole series again once it is over.

regarding the extended experience label...

that's because some episodes were in fact a little longer. they ended 10mins later than usual but that was with commercials. this review says they all seemed normal length so maybe all they did was add 1 or 2 mins and just a crapload extra commercials. lol

but the year this season aired, many shows were doing this...NBC even labeled theirs as "super-sized" episodes.

You know, Josh, you're the reason I'm addicted to this damn show. Normally, I don't care for television, but after your season one review, I had to watch and my god, this series is insane!

I love it and can't wait for Season 5 in Dec and the 6th season finale. But now, come November, I have to watch the pilot episode of "V" with Elizabeth Mitchell. I use to love the original series and want to see how this holds up.

You could really get the feeling during the 2nd season that they didn't know if the show would be continuously going and going with no end in sight, or if there was an end goal. It just dragged on and on with the Tallies and their stories.

But once Ben was introduced, things REALLY got good.

No doubt.. I just knew that there was something about that guy when they first introduced him... It was in his eyes...

The actor that plays Ben (Michael Emerson) is an excellent actor. I hope to see more of him in the future in Hollywood.

What I'm really digging best of the whole series, which you can see slowly developing in Season Two but not coming into fruition until about midway of Season Three, is how lightly the show treads along certain schools of thought in philosophy with the tension between John and Jack.

John Locke, of course, displays many of the attributes of Locke's philosophies with a bit of Hobbes thrown in and some elements of de Spinoza and Leibniz. Well, he's pretty much representative of 17th Century wisdom altogether.

Jack, in sharp contrast, shows characteristics of Enlightenment thinking, particularly Hume and Paine with Rousseau and Voltaire thrown into the mix.

Did I mention that I love this show. Thanks a bunch, Josh.

What I meant in the review is that the episodes are the same length as they were when broadcast. Generally, when something's described as an "Extended Edition" or whatnot, that means that new footage has been added. As far as I'm aware, that's not the case here.

At least in the Season 4 "Expanded Experience", there was 30 seconds of new content added to one episode.

The main problem was that Season 2 introduced a bunch of new interesting characters and then they all got killed off quickly without developing them enough. I liked Ana Lucia, I thought she was much more fascinating than Kate.

Spoiler:

Man, I love Kate. Much more than Ana Lucia. At any rate "Ana Lucia" forced the issue and the writers killed her off:

And she did not seem to care:
http://www.hollywood.com/news/Rodrig...nymore/3499120

Libby (Cynthia Watros) was also rumored to getting kicked off the show since she tagged along with Rodriguez and also got a DUI.

Personally I thought it was awesome when Libby got killed off. It was a big surprise. I love the fact that the writers of this show like to really shake things up and are not afraid of taking chances. Killing off Ana Lucia and Libby really made you realize that nobody was safe on the show... It made the show unpredictable.

Dont really know if this needs a spoiler or not but whatever...
Spoiler:
I heard that the killed off Ana Lucia because viewers as a hole didn't like her. The reason for killing off Libby was because Ana Lucia was apparently so universally hated that her death would bring cheers, so to add a bit more of an emotional punch to the episode they decided to kill off Libby, a very well liked character, to bring some tears.

Of course that has "nothing" to do with the DUI charges...
I still think Libby's story needs more explaining and more of a conclusion, and i doubt well see it...

In one of the commentaries, either the writers or producers (I forget which) state that:

Spoiler:
Michelle Rodriguez was only ever contracted to be in the show for one season. The writers knew from the beginning that the character would be killed off at the end of the season.

Good. I never liked her character.

Libby though...
Spoiler:
It really seemed like the writers had bigger plans for her. There was a lot of mystery surrounding her.. She was in the cafe with Desmond and nonates her sailboat.. She was in the same psychiatric ward as Hurley.. Was she Dharma? An other? I thought she was going to play a much larger role.. Then, BAM!, they kill her.. Awesome stuff...

Season 2 really redeemed itself in the last half. Some great moments and twists in it. And the acting always makes it worth watching.

I was a huge V fan too. Great sci-fi, reptilians, and Jane Badler... good times. Kenneth Johnson (the original creator) released a new book (V: The Second Generation) last year. It was a good read. I too am looking forward to the new show and hope it succeeds.

Wouldn't that also be a sure ticket for Linus and a lot of others to the boats?

Anyhow, any viewer considerations sure make for a bad show. I think the first season was a bit too like "Survivor" * anyways. The show only got me after 2 started, (the first season friends forced on me really, under constant and great bitching on my part) but I can see how others react opposite to the turn of the plot.

*I'm pretty sure the plot was not all that well defined in season one actually, no mater what "proof" some feel they may have otherwise.
