Default 'Two Lovers' - High-Def Digest Review

Drew has reviewed 'Two Lovers.' Despite its star's apparent efforts to sabotage the film's marketing, he was pleased to discover this wonderful little movie that went largely unseen upon its release. This Blu-ray's video and audio present the film perfectly. Extras are bit thin and of varied success, but this movie is still recommended.

To quote from the review:
'Thank you for releasing this movie in the dreadful year of 2009. It sort of offsets stuff like 'Wolverine.' Almost.'

This is a little harsh isn't it? While 2008 has been the standout year for me of recent times, 2009 is following along nicely.

The period I would much rather forget is the 2004-2006 period where nearly every movie let me down and had very few highlights. This streak was finally broken with Casino Royale, which was a movie that not only lived up to expectation, but far exceeded it! I then saw Children of Men and Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer (an instant fave) in the same week, and since that time I have found movies to be better than average.

Wolverine, for me, delivered exactly what it promised from the trailers... cheese, and a bit of fun.

Great film indeed. Probably my favorite so far this year.

It's sad that Joaquin quit acting (I think he'll be back though). Also, it's good to see Paltrow back to her usual goods. Her last good role was back when she did 'Proof'.

I didn't particularly like it when watching its HDNet initial release (before theatres).

I thought this was a GREAT movie. Superb acting. Although someone tell dear gwyneth that she doesn't need to show her boobs in a movie, she's better than that...

Nice. Been interested in this one, good review, have to check it out now for sure.
Miss me some good ol' Pheonix.

It is funny how amazing last year was in movies, and this year is kinda just a meh...

And yes. Wolverine was crap.

2008's surprises, for me, came in unexpected places. Wall-E, The Dark Knight, Pineapple Express... all "summer" films, usually a genre clotted with escapist prattle, all sincere, articulate, engaging, and thoroughly well executed. It was in the "prestige" department that 2008 fell short. Redbelt and The Wrestler were exceptional... there are even some really commendable things about Milk and Curious Case of Benjamin Button... but most of the film considered awards material were terrible bores... The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire top a long list of films that will either date themselves or be forgotten within a decade.

2009, though, is following nicely - indeed.

So far: Two Lovers, Observe and Report, Departures, Moon, Up, Away We Go, Tetro, Drag Me To Hell, Coraline, and Duplicity could be my "top ten" by years end and I'd be satisfied.

Then there's the list of films I haven't seen, or haven't been released yet... Limits of Control, Gomorrah, The Hurt Locker, Funny People, Ponyo, Tree of Life, Where The Wild Things Are, Inglorious Basterds, The Invention of Lying, Fantastic Mr. Fox, A Serious Man, Shutter Island, The Road, The Informant, The Box, The Lovely Bones, and Avatar.... it's enough to think this might be the best year this decade.

Though, if I had to pick a favorite so far, it's 2007.... no contest.

Back to this film: grossly unseen and under appreciated. I can only echo the reviewer's sentiments.

More folks should give it a shot... the PQ is very pleasing, as well.
