Thumbs up 'World Trade Center' -- High-Def Digest review

Well, I finally forced myself to watch it:

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/worldtradecenter.html

Honestly, I didn't want to see the movie. But I came away admiring it -- if nothing else, Oliver Stone was passionate and restrained. But no doubt about it, it is a fabulous disc. Great transfer, soundtrack, extras -- I can't find any fault. It is also up there with the best Blu-ray titles yet in my book.

If you're at all interested in the movie, a definite recommend.

I have not seen this film. The high marks that you gave to the movie itself, video, audio and supplements make it look very attractive.

I agree Mentok, this looks like one I'll go for, although after watching United 93 I'm not sure whether I can stomach another 9/11 movie.

This is an interesting release. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is probably the first real head to head comparison of two different compression formats. The HD DVD release is encoded in VC1 and the Blu-ray release is given an Mpeg 2 encoding. The difference with this release is that the Blu-ray disc is 50GB and well encoded unlike some initial Blu-ray releases which will remain nameless. I know VC1 is the most efficient but would be very interested to know which codec produces the most faithful reproduction of the digital master?

Who is it that says the DD track on Blu-ray gets 1.5 Mpbs?
Dolby states that the maximum bit rate on Blu-ray of Dolby Digital is 640 Kbps, so how can it be 1.5 Mbps and not be Dolby Digital Plus.
Peter is it possible for you to find out some more information on this?

Ok I just got WTC on BD and I am playing it on a PS3 Samsung 1080p DLP w/HDMI and the movie is very noisy in dark scenes. Very grainy. Is anyone else noticed this???

I noticed a bit of grain as well during the dimly lit scenes as well. Wasn't sure if it was film grain or digital noise. Film grain I can live with as that is the nature of the film stock they choose to use.

I noticed that the Oliver Stone clips in the "making of" seemed to have an unusally amount of digital noise (grain?). I'm using a PS3 via HDMI on a Sammy 720P display. I wasn't sure if it's disc related, PS3 related or the way its suppose to be

"...The interiors of the World Trade Center sequences, after the firemen have been trapped..."

Firemen...?!?!?! The film goes to great pains to show that these are PAPD officers...! Mr. Bracke you REALLY need to correct your review! You called them firemen many, many times in the review! The uniforms don't really look alike!

Also, all the deleted scenes on disc 1 are NOT in HD, they are only in 480P...!

I live in NYC-I had seen it all! One part of me wants to see the movie, but I'm just not sure if I am mentally ready to. I just feel like enough time hasn't passed.

Hiya dandeeswish

I am from NYC (currently living in Berkeley) and I watched it last nite.
I was 4 blocks away when it happened (I had jury duty that day and I got off the 1 train at chambers st. right after the first plane hit and I saw virtually the whole event firsthand including people jumping and seeing one of the towers collapsing...) and the first 1/2 hour of the film definitely gave me the wigguns but then it settles into the aftermath of the collapse. Very tastefully done, not sensationalized or overly graphic. A bit long but excellent performances and production. The commentary track by one of the 2 officers and his rescuers was fascinating to listen to as well, (I actually rewatched 1/2 of the film with the track...)
It's actually a very positive and uplifting story and the end scene was wonderful and emotional.

I'm sure it won't be everyone's cup of tea but I liked it.
