Default 'Eden Log' - High-Def Digest Review

Tom has reviewed 'Eden Log.' He says this one is all style over substance,
much like the log seen on TV screens every Christmas, but that's a different subject entirely. This Blu-ray looks pretty good, sounds pretty good, but man oh man, that's a lame batch o' supplements. Give this puppy a rent first!

I've never heard of this before now. I might have to rent this.

Good review, pretty much nailed it.
I watched this awhile ago, and it was definitely a WTF experience. It is stylish and some of the locations they film at are badass. But watching a dude walk down a corridor can only enetertain for so long.
And the ending! I'm usually the one that does the explaining on endings and explaining plot twists.
But can someone help me with that? It was a big WTF moment for me...

Same here, the ending was a WTF moment. My thoughts below...

Spoiler:
The only think I think happened was somehow they were using the sap from the tree for energy or something and it was killing the tree. The main character somehow reacted different to whatever was making everyone turn into the humanoid monsters and was able to inject it into the tree making it grow. It kind of reminded me of the Matrix in that this tree is hidden from everyone and he is exposing it somehow. I don't know

I thought this movie was amazing!
The imagery was mind blowning and totally original.

I'm a little confused here. I thought this film was suppose to be in French from the beginning being the overview this is about films from around the world. I have to ask WHY is it presented in English to begin with.
Tom are you trying to tell me that the director's version in French is a supplement and a different movie lookswise and all? If not this then WHY would Marc Cuban, a man who seems to respect us getting original audio and Lossless at that, force a dub as opposed to the original track?
I mean if the second thing is the case I'm now just totally disgusted with Mr.Cuban.

I enjoyed the movie overall, but, yeah I didn't feel that I had a full grasp of the story. Here's what I got:

Spoiler:
The company, Eden Log, is using the sap from the tree to power the city, but the tree is dying due to over mining (can I call it mining?). Eden Log relies on immigrant laborers who are working under the idea that after a period of time they will be allowed to become citizens and work on the surface. However, they are actually using the workers to feed the tree. They are somehow feeding the workers' lifeforce to the tree to keep it alive. At some point exposure to the sap has begun to mutate the miners. There was some sort of major revolt in which many of the workers were killed. The Eden Log company wanted to kill the mutants and keep the incident quiet but some of the scientists wanted to go public with the information because they didn't agree with what was happening to the workers (mutating, being fed to the tree, etc) so they were killed by the security forces as well.

At the end of the movie our hero seems to let the tree loose of its confines likely to grow and mutate the rest of the population or some such. That's where I got really fuzzy.

Overall, I think the movie deserves a solid 3 stars--4 if it were more clear.
So where do I send my copy of Chrysalis for a review?

having seen chrysalis, i'd say anyone who signs up for that one is asking for a world of hurt.

very nice looking disc, very awful disjointed poorly written flick.

Eden Log, big on my want list.

It's an odd duck. Basically it's the same movie, just some parts of it were filmed in both English and French so the main version has some people speaking English and others you can tell they have been dubbed.

And the special feature one is entirely in French. Obviously it's the one to watch, but unfortunately it's in standard definition. Defeats the purpose of going Blu-ray.

Does the import Blu-ray have the completely French version in HD?

Now I'm so disgusted. I'm contacting Magnolia and complaining. I'd just as soon have it in French and consistent throughout, to where it isn't being dubbed. Heck I wouldn't mind the version you watched as long as it went French when it was suppose to or was the recording recordings(one recorded in English, one French for the English dialogue stuff by the director).

Wait...what!? Did we watch the same film? My copy has both versions in HD. And, from what I read (http://www.dvdoutsider.co.uk/dvd/rev.../eden_log.html) what few speaking scenes there were were shot in French then re-shot (not dubbed) in English.
