Default 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' - High-Def Digest Review

In order to do them all justice, High-Def Digest is reviewing each film in the 'Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection' individually. We'll get into the nitty gritty of each movie as we cover the other titles, but overall, the complete set is an easy recommendation.

First up, Josh has reviewed 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture.' He says this is the most underrated of the 'Trek' films. The high-def video and lossless audio are both terrific. Plenty of extras as well.

I agree with everything said here. I watched this movie for the first time since being like 17 and found it to be extremely engaging.

My secondary TV is in my livingroom and is a 42" Panasonic Viera 1080p plasma screen. I've got a Samsung BD-UP5000 connected to that for all my HD needs. No surround sound there, though.

I like the idea of each disc getting its own review. Cool stuff.

I do believe this is the first time I've ever seen a Dolby TruHD 7.1 track on a movie! I'm impressed.

I feel like celebrating; it's a rare day indeed that I agree with Josh Z but, for my money, the first three films in the series are the best. In fact, for all the adoration WRATH OF KHAN gets, parts I and III (the latter of which is my personal favorite, and I'll go to my grave stunned that I'm in a tiny minority for believing so), in my opinion, are the two that most powerfully capture what was important about STAR TREK. The intellectual breadth of TMP and the emotional breadth of TSFS are unmatched elsewhere in the series.

Same here. Good to hear that the pq in this flick is not as bad as I had read on other reviews. May have to get the boxset after all....I was just planning on gettting II,III, and IV.

The Nightmare Before Christmas also has a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track.

I'm banging these reviews out as fast as I can, but the box set has about 15,000 hours of bonus features altogether. Being a Trekkie, I need to watch them all (though I have cut some of the commentaries short).

I really like TMP. I think the issue that it had is that it wasnt Star Wars. It was straight up old school science fiction, just like Star Trek always was. Star Wars is fantasy. Seeing that the movie is in fact in HD is pushing me a little closer to buying the box set. I love Khan, like TMP alot and Search for Spock is growing on me. And how can you not love the awesomeness that is Voyage Home? "Ve are looking for the nucleer wessels."

"Ever since the set was released, buzz has been circulating online that 'Star Trek II' is the only remotely watchable Blu-ray in the set, and that all of the others look like 18th-generation VHS tapes smothered in Digital Noise Reduction."

Welp, that's AVS Forum for ya. They could find Edge Enhancement and DNR on Wall-E or Sin City.

I've always thought TMP was more akin to 2001: A Space Odyssey than anything like Star Wars. I like it.
