Lecter isn't supposed to be a typical serial murderer. It's the fact that he didn't act like a crazy mofo that made him so difficult to find and to catch.

I think you're overselling this "crazy mofo" aspect of Hopkins performance, expecially re: RED DRAGON; again, curse the choice of direction, if you will, but the more Grand Guignol style of everything in HANNIBAL makes dramatic sense in terms of Hannibal getting back what he most desperately desired--his freedom.

Lecter, like all serial killers, is a sociopath, not a psychopath, although he does have psychotic tendencies. This is how Lecter is played in Manhunter and Silence Of The Lambs. In Hannibal and Red Dragon he is just a camp ghoul put on screen to scare the kids.

Any word on this release? I'm looking forward to seeing Manhunter on blu-ray and am shocked that the release of any Michael Mann film on blu-ray could come out with so little buzz. I haven't found any reviews, previews, anything at all in recent days about this. And the fact that it's only being released as part of a package? Seems kind of lame to do this to a film that is a cult classic and a work of one of the more important directors out there today. Netflix it is for now...

THD, you may not be aware of MGM/Fox's distribution system. they don't send out screeners early like many other studios, instead waiting to release day or the day after to send out the titles for review and publicity.

the only time a review on a Fox/MGM title is EVER up early is if someone nabbed it from a retailer early and pumped it through as fast as can be.

if you want to see reviews for Fox/MGM products BEFORE they hit shelves, so as to not be forced to buy into something blindly, then start a petition or letter writing campaign that they send to reviewers early.

it's just a flawed logic. when a movie gets theatrical release, they only keep reviewers away from early screenings if they know the film is a piece of shit. so why an entire studio practices this is beyond me, as it doesn't show confidence in their product.

I guess that I am in the minority when I say that I really enjoy Hanibal. I wasnt huge on Red Dragon. I havent seen Manhunter though.

I have my thoughts on the entire set of films, but am reserving them for obvious reasons.

According to someone over at Blu-ray.com that already has it. All 3 movies are in 1 Blu-ray case not individual cases. He has a picture of the back of the case which shows the specs & what it look like.

Also Hannibal is MPEG-2 like Silence of the Lambs. Both have DTS-HD MA.

I haven't seen reviews.

I haven't decided if I'm going to buy it since I only want Hannibal. I already own Silence of the Lambs.

Why they couldn't have done a new transfer in AVC is beyond me for Hannibal. Also they should have released it individually since Silence of the Lambs was released that way.

I hate MGM.

I didn't know that, so thanks for the information. I generally pay not enough attention to the studio for any given release, so I don't know what MGM's reputation is for DVD or Blu-Ray. Assuming they put out product that isn't universally terrible, it does seem bad for business to not put out some advance review copies to generate excitement. If I had read just one positive review of Manhunter from here or any other reputable site, I would have held my nose and bought the entire three-film package. I know there are other Michael Mann fans (not to mention Demme fans who passed on SOTL til now) out there who would have done the same.

I expected this kind of case, so I'm not disappointed. I hate single spine, non-removable boxsets, but hey, I'm just happy to get more Hannibal on Blu.

THD, thank you for seeing my side of this one. It is an unfair, bizarre situation that MGM/Fox have created, but at least they send out catalog titles like this, something some studios don't do. So....they're not perfect, but they're not the worst, at all.

I probably expected too much of anyone in thinking they care about studio as much as I do (I use this to see what kind of release I'll get, region coding, attention to detail and extras, so on), but thanks for not taking it the wrong way.

I will treat this set with a high priority when it comes in, as it is one I've long wanted (all we're missing now is domestic releases of Red Dragon and Rising, both of which are available in Europe), so I can imagine there are many others out there like me who are eager to hear about how Manhunter or Hannibal hold up.

Hannibal is being released separately in many countries including the UK. It has a VC-1 encode there from MGM.

Here's a couple of reviews of the UK version. One good & one bad.

Not sure which one to believe.

I was hoping to upgrade over the German version I have since it has a DTS-HR lossy soundtrack.

I'd rather have a lossless DTS-HD MA soundtrack. I guess I'll wait for a review on the US MPEG-2 version to see how the PQ is on that one.

It'll be a while as Fox/MGM sends out review copies a few days after release.

I'd certainly like some Manhunter feedback from the first person able to post about it....

Not worried about the rest of the movies in the set.

I'm very interested in both Hannibal and Manhunter. Hannibal is one of my favourite movies and the European VC1 encode, while not a Gladiator level catastrophe, doesn't look all that great. (I still haven't figured out if it's DNR or just a naturally soft film. Maybe a mixture of both. At least there's no Edge-Enhancement)
