Default 'Hellraiser Puzzle Box' - High-Def Digest Review

Tom has reviewed the 'Hellraiser Puzzle Box.' He says this isn't for everyone, but Pinhead fans should be happy. This Blu-ray set offers some nice upgrades for the video and audio, along with plenty of supplements. Worth a look.

They should have brought out Hellraiser 2 or even 3 along with it in blu ray and put them in the box instead of the s dvds.

This movie scared the hell out of me. I'm a bit of a Clive Barker fan though, read most of his books, so this is an essential buy for me

I think it's because they're all about milking the franchise just like the Evil Dead guys.
Next yr they sell another different cube with the second film in it and so on and so on. When they sold their different series of action figures, each action figure package had a side to a cube in it so you had to buy a bunch of them to finish the cube.

I've never really unserstood the passion for this movie.

I caught it last year on AMC around Halloween as I never saw it back in the 80's just to see what all the buzz was about, and I gotta say I thought it was just "ok". Maybe it was the hype but I thought the whole thing was pretty dull.

Also, it seems like the version I watched basically took the entire first act you described and condensed it down to about 3 minutes. Did I miss something? Because that was a lot of backstory that I just never saw on the screen.

I have not seen this movie in a really really long time and I remember being freaked out by it and loving it at the same time. I must say that puzzle box is very tempting!

gotta say I'm really getting tired of reviewers saying "I suspect this film has never looked better" or any of the ways this can be said.
I mean that should just be inferred at this point with bd.
there is little point trying to compare a hd release with the corresponding dvd anymore imo because it is clear that the bd will win EVERY TIME.
unless someone can produce a list of all the dvds that have better pq than ANY corresponding release from a MAJOR studio.
(so no counting "Gulliver's Travels)
now granted there are a few select hd releases that have color timing issues, and when that occurs it should obviously be noted.
but otherwise I think we all know by now that the bd blows the dvd out of the water.
don't we?
so let's just focus on the hd release, and forget about listing ad nauseum every way the bd release surpasses the sd one.

This case is a little bit different because the set provides the DVD right in the box. If I didn't talk about the comparisons and what was an improvement, then there'd be a post in this thread saying "the DVD is provided in the box, and you didn't even list what was stronger on the Blu-ray? Weak!"

I don't think Blu-ray automatically means as good as its ever looked. You could get a Blu-ray with a terrible transfer (Butch Cassidy), awful tinkering (French Connection), or just a questionable encode (Ronin). In all those cases, I think there's room for debate as to whether the film is looking "as good as it ever has."

With a great transfer, a clean source, or a loving restoration Blu-ray is top of the line, but you have to give it some quality ingredients to work with.

I understand.
I'm just venting a little.
but I do feel all reviewers in general need to begin to move away from dvd comparisons regarding bd.
It is obvious to me that comparisons to dvd do not need to be made in EVERY single hd review at this point in time.
In the first 2 years or so maybe so, but not as much now imo.
I guess I should say this--when warranted discuss the problems, but if there is no point in talking about the dvd because it is so obviously inferior, then don't.
just my 2 cents for the day.

Actually, a DVD comparison for older catalog titles is imperative, IMO. For lots of people, the blu-ray upgrade might NOT be worth the expenditure, especially for older stuff that doesnt have a great master to work with. To make some old films look HD-ish they have to DNR the shit out of them or whatever elese and they can be dicey.
