Hmm that makes the subtitles being wrong even weirder. So if I watched the dubbed version with subtitles it wouldn't match? Lol.

Damn...that is pretty stupid that they released this flick with the subtitles all changed and screwed up like that. What the hell were they thinking??!!??

Well shit. I was going to at least rent this movie to see what the big deal was, but there is no way I'm watching this crapified version. What the hell is wrong with the studio? On the blog link the author speculates that they would have had to pay the original translator again for the video release, so they had someone else do it on the cheap. If this is true, I hope everybody catches wind of this and doesn't buy the thing. They deserve to lose the money.

Or it was a simple mistake and they will recall the discs and offer replacements, in which case we're cool

IMPORTANT: Everybody write to Magnolia and complain until they fix this. It's a travesty, and a complete stain upon one of the best movies of 2008. Here's the address:

    dvd@magpictures.com

    Get to work!!!

wow - that is a disgrace. I just saw this the other day at the cinema with the proper subtitles - I can't believe how raped those US DVD/BD subtitles are! And to think I was about to order the US BD - thank God I didn't!

Sad, just sad. I almost bought this last weekend, and put it back down. Instinct wins again. And it's sad because I truly love this movie. Hopefully Magnolia will make it right.

How are the subs messed up? They seem to be just a different translation, but the sentences are the same. Hell, the first set seems to have broken english whereas the second set is more grammatically correct. "Are you sure that I want to be your friend?" makes absolutely no sense. It sounds to me that he got use to one set of subtitles and does not like having another set. The same thing happens with anime and fansubs. When you get use to one fansubbers subtitles, and when the company that legally releases the show in the US has a different set of subs, people get upset.

Look at the damn comparisons. It looks like something I would do to subtitle a film by myself.

The Swedish Blu-ray release has the original English subs, not the simplified ones that are being bashed in the linked article. That may be a good option for importers. I have that Swedish disc and I checked the first scene that was covered in the comparison article.

It's region free too. Just missing the lossless audio though but for me that's not so critical. The 768 kbps DTS track on it sounds pretty strong anyway.
