'Quantum of Solace' - High-Def Digest Review

Our review of 'Quantum of Solace' has been posted. This 007 isn't quite up to par with 'Casino Royale,' but it's still kinetic and engaging fun. This Blu-ray should serve as demo material for quite a while, with almost perfect video and five star audio. Extras are slim, in preparation for the inevitable double, triple, and quadruple dips to come. Worth a look, recommended for fans (Editor's Note - I'm sure grabbing this one).

Couldn't disagree with that more... Casino Royal was a let down for me, QoS has given me faith that Craig might actually be able to pull off bond.

You're probably in the extreme minority there, but you're entitled to your opinion of course. Craig is a very good James Bond, I agree there. Either way, good to see another really good review for this.

I actually kinda agree with you there... I don't understand all the fuss about Casino Royale to be honest (it was good, but not THAT good), but I quite liked QoS (perhaps moreso than CR).

I thought Casino Royale was a huge letdown as well. Very disappointed with it. Because of CR, I didn't even bother looking up any info on QOS until now, but now that I see that Marc Forster directed this one, I'm definitely going to check this out now.

Quantum is the name of the organization.

On first view I was a bit disappointed as it's a lesser film than Casino Royale. On second view I was able to follow the story better and while it does have some shortcomings, it's a good story and more importantly an emotional arc for the Bond character.

I think you're right on target with your assessment. I was quite underwhelmed with QoS the first time I saw it (and also had trouble keeping up with the plot). I enjoyed it far more the second time around, and thought the film got a really unfair beating from most critics.

I think I still give the edge to Casino Royale, but not by much.

I loved CR and I'm probably one of the few who like QoS as much as CR if not a little more. I'm looking forward to a second viewing though to make sure that still holds true. The opening sequence was horrid though, imo.

QoS for me isnt a patch on Casino. Casino re-invented a stripped down gadget free Bond. QoS didn't actually move the character on at all it was just a revenge story wrapped up as a Bond movie and we have seen an angry Bond before in Licence to Kill.

Look at the rooftop chase sequence for example in QoS which is a direct rip off of a Bourne chase sequence but its a poor imitation and ends limply compared to the Bourne fight at the end of the chase. The opening Madagascar chase in Casino for my money tops anything in QoS including the Ronin lite opening car chase which while loud isnt anything Michael Bay couldnt knock together over over a cup of coffee using those roads.

For me personally there was no need to do a sequel and Daniel Craig has confirmed the next movie will have nothing to do with Casino or Quantum which means it was pointless, we dont know what Bond learnt in the last scene about Vesper and the Quantum organisation is being forgotten about.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, QoS improves exponentially when you view it as the final acts of Casino Royale rather than its own entry into the series.

yeah quantum is the name of the organization as mentioned above.

for me, casino royale was my favorite bond film of all time, it's a masterpiece imo. i've seen em all multiple times and this is my deff my number 1. QoS was not as good as CR, but for the most part it was a very good bond film, i'd give the film rating a 3.75/5 if i could, which would round to a 4/5...

one question for peter or others who feel this way, how was the ending so much like the bourne ultimatum?? i don't feel that way at all but please elaborate if you feel this way.

It seems extremely likely to me that Quantum will return in the next installment. I just think Craig meant that Bond's revenge is done, and he's off to doing his job. And Quantum is likely to interfere with that....
