Default 'Quo Vadis' - High-Def Digest Review

David has reviewed 'Quo Vadis.' He says the film won him over and is definitely worth a look. This Blu-ray has breathtaking video, nicely cleaned up audio, and worthwhile extras. Recommended.

I happen to think it's a slap in the face Warner can't offer the original Mono in PCM. If smaller companies like Criterion can do it I don't see why Warner and others can't as well. We're talking about Mono or Stereo to begin with so why diminish it by using a compressed codec like Dolby Digital to begin with? You're also not WASTING your money paying Dolby Digital royalties for nothing.

Amen! I too am disappointed Warner can't get with the program when it comes to using lossless audio on all of their BDs. Wasn't there recently word from Warner that they were going to change their tune? Apparently, not soon enough.

As I say in my review, 'Quo Vadis' was prepped for Blu-ray before WHV made its pledge to include lossless Dolby TrueHD audio on all its classic high-def releases. Unfortunately, 'An American in Paris' (coming on 3/31) is in the same boat, and will also feature only the original mono track. 'Gigi' (also due on 3/31) will get the full TrueHD 5.1 treatment.

But don't shy away from 'Quo Vadis' just because of the audio. The PQ more than makes up for it.

Ummm I was actually referring to PCM in the Mono rather then TrueHD 5.1. I'd just as soon they include both for the surround fanatics. Personally I'd rather have the original track in PCM however since back then sound wasn't really styled for surround and such so you're really not going to see a benefit.

I would like "Casablanca" to be fixed to include Mono PCM as well. I mean that's black and white and there's no excuse not for that to be Mono PCM except Warner's laziness in putting it on.

I don't disagree but now that I think about it some more, has Warner ever used PCM on a Blu-ray?

Yes, before 2008 Warner was using PCM on most of its lossless offerings. 300 had both PCM and Dolby TrueHD.

Considering the probable frequency response of a recording from 1951, I have great doubt there would be much, if any, audible difference between PCM and Dolby digital.

zaphod,

Nice to find another Deborah Kerr fan! Such an underrated actress, despite her six Oscar nominations. It's such a shame she couldn't have won one outright, considering all the amazing performances she has given. But at least the Academy finally got around to giving her an honorary award before she passed away.

With so little to do in 'Quo Vadis,' she still makes an impression. She's really the perfect Lygia.

I don't care, I still want the choice. I RESENT that choice being made for me by Warner and other studios. Also it easily saves Warner money, they don't have to pay Dolby royalties if they'd have used PCM instead.
David what do you expect? Old Hollywood is full of close minded people and biased one's as well. Why do you think Animated films never win or get nominated for Best Picture? What else? Oh and how often foreign language films never get a nom either. Especially if it's Asian. Oh and Best Foreign Language and Animated film categories are a slap in the face to those films for getting real competition and earning an award.
