Default 'Australia' - High-Def Digest Review

David has reviewed 'Australia.' He says this movie isn't for everyone, but those with a love of glossy epics and classic romantic adventures may like it. This Blu-ray has great video and audio and a sweeping array of supplements. For fans, this is a must own, for others, it's worth a look.

Is this more Far and Away or Moulin Rouge?

Actually like F&A, faults aside, but couldn't stand MR.

I am kind of surprised that the movie itself gets such a high reating here. I have not seen it and don't intend to but as far as I know it received rather bad reviews. I liked Romeo & Juliette and Moulin Rouge but this one is a no go for me.

Oohh...Baz did Romeo and Juliet as well? I like the play, just not the post-modern take on it.

Make that strike two against old Bazzie for me.

If you liked his other films, you should at least give this a rent. Its a fun movie, and you might end up enjoying it. For my money, it is far better than Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge.

Before this movie, I didn't care for a single film in Baz Luhrmann's repertoire. Not to say this movie is worth picking up at full price, but if you want a decent weekend rental with really good PQ and AQ, this movie will do you right.

I hated Moulin Rouge with a passion. It took me a few veiwings to grow acustom to Romeo and Juliet. I would like to watch this but can wait for the price to drop a bit.

i enjoyed moulin rouge, though i have never had the urge to review it. romeo + juliet i've watched more times than i'd care to admit. it's a bastardization, and a horrible one at that, but i LOVE the music in it.

Funny thing is that I'm a 9th grade English teacher, and after we read Romeo and Juliet I always let the students watch both versions of the film. After we watch the films I have them write a critical essay, in which they discuss which version of the film is there favorite and why. I always thought the students would like the "Leonardo Dicaprio Version" the best, but 9 out of 10 students say they HATE that version.

Needless to say, quite a few of the boys write "I liked the old version because the girl shows her boobies!"

Thumbs down

Had high hopes for 'Australia' when I saw it theatrically, but have to agree w/most of the critics who saw it as a cliched-riddened, overwrought period piece that fell well short of its epic aspirations. Nevertheless, I'm sure there'll be many who'll enjoy the BD presentation.

Well, really not much to lose by Netflix'ing it...

I didn't care much for 'Moulin Rouge' either (and I love musicals), and I really wasn't expecting much from 'Australia' when my wife dragged me to it last fall. But the film ultimately won me over. It's fun, escapist fare - and like I said in my review - very much like an old-fashioned Hollywood epic. If you go into it expecting a serious, substantive historical film, you will be disappointed. But if you just hop on for the ride and don't over-analyze, Luhrmann provides a relaxing, enjoyable experience.

I couldn't finish this trash and turned it off. Doesn't help that I think Nicole Kidman can't act and is incredibly overrated.

I don't share the hatred of Kidman, but I will say it was a bit of a chore to get through the flick. My own review is up at Amazon, though I mentioned much of the same in a previous thread about the flick.

Get past the mess that makes up a lot of the first 15 - 20 minutes worth of the film (trying to be too cutesy and comical) and the rest isn't as bad, though I think it could have and should have been leaner and a bit more tightly focused on story throughout.

Oh well, you're missing out on a great movie.
