Default 'Pinocchio' - High-Def Digest Review

Here's a midday bonus if you're heading to the video store after work. Peter's review of 'Pinocchio' has been posted. He says this is his favorite Disney film. This Blu-ray is another top shelf Disney effort, with 5 star video, excellent audio, and a boatload of extras. Highly recommended.

Good review, just a couple of things I noticed:

"Pinocchio must act the part of a real boy, by being always honest, selfish and kind." - I think he meant selfless here.

"There, Pinocchio escapes with the help of the Blue Fairy, eventually ending up on a very bizarre place called Pleasure Island, where puppets are transformed into donkeys, and Pinocchio must eventually rescue Geppetto from the belly of a giant whale." - This really should be "where naughty boys are transformed into donkeys" or "where naughty children are transformed into donkeys" (I don't remember seeing any girls though).

great review--
now if only Disney will start sending more than 5 copies of the Blu per BB as opposed to the 100 sd copies we'll really have something.
just hard to believe Disney and BB are still on the 5 copy bandwagon.

Note: This transfer is presented in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1, pillarboxed to fill the 16:9 frame. However, Disney provides an option to "paint in" the pillarbox with patterned color. I found it gave an odd, distracting effect, but it's your choice.)

how can this be a 5 star transfer if it is boxed?

Pinocchio' looks fantastic by any measure for a 70 year-old film.

hmmmmmmm...now what exactly does that mean

pillarboxing (details can be found on the wikipedia definition page) does not mean the image was altered, stretched to fit, or panned in, losing some of the details. it means that it's a 1.33 ratio, with black bars on the left and right of the video, the opposite of a 2.35 picture that has them running on the top and bottom of the screen.

just because a film is full frame, doesn't mean it's any less beautiful. if one were to shift their tv to stretch it, that's one's own fault for not viewing a media the way it is intended.

Wow, I'm going to have to get this one. I'm not much of a Disney fan (the only one I currently own is Aladdin on DVD) but I used to watch Pinocchio a lot when I was a kid.

I never realized how weird and dark the movie was until I thought about it recently. I mean, a bunch of kids end up turning into donkeys and sent off to salt mines

Because it maintains the original aspect ratio of the film. It is faithful to the source and theatrical experiecne.

Movies looked different in the past (different film stock, different filming techniques). This transfer preserves that, and avoids the mistake of trying to make it look like a movie made in 2009, but still looks fantastic.

It's about darn time this review got posted! Now I'm kind of wishing I had remembed how slow amazon is with bluray preorders and decided to forego the preorder in favor of just going out to best buy and picking it up there... Sure maybe it's more expensive, but for something like this it's worth it!

Wherehouse.com had it for $22.xx during a recent sale (the sale is over) and they shipped my copy last week. It arrived yesterday. I just did not get a chance to watch it yet. Can't wait.

Heaven forbid you have to wait one more day for a 70 year old film kidding... it does suck that amazon can't get stuff on the day generally.

just finished watching my copy.
all I can say is
WOW!
this has gotta be in the top 10 bds issued so far in terms of overall excellence.
I don't know what it looked like in the theater in 1940, but this bd is truly magical.
