Default 'Ping Pong Playa' - High-Def Digest Review

As a midday, midweek bonus, we give you Ernie's review of 'Ping Pong Playa.' He says this film could be especially interesting to people living the Asian-American experience. This Bllu-ray has solid video and audio and some good extras. Worth a look.

I had a real hard time finding this movie very funny. I dont know, the stereo-typically talking all hip-hop yo yo in a film just isnt that funny to me.

Actually it's a crossing of two cultures (Chinese-American and Hip-Hop) and such is the case in this melting pot. As an Asian American you struggle to take in what America has to offer, while trying to remain close to your roots as a child under your very traditional parents. I think this movie shows that well.

The best part of the movie was the cereal rap in the soundtrack.

I still think there's a place for family comedies. I love the average Apatow comedy as much as the next guy or gal, but those aren't always the flicks I can put in with the family over for Christmas.

I also think this film played pretty well at the Asian Film Festival in San Diego this past fall. So it has its audience. It's full of sugar-sweet and easy laughs but again, there's a particular niche that this film was made for and I think that particular audience would enjoy this.

The reviewer hit it dead on, that to truly appreciate all the subtleties of the film it helps to go through the experience. The way they mix english and chinese when talking to the parents, as well as the general themes presented are all very accurate. Not a great movie but entertaining.
