Thumbs up 'Enemy of the State' -- High-Def Digest review

Catching up on recent titles, and checked out 'Enemy of the State':

I was really surprised and impressed with the soundtrack and transfer in particular. No extended cut and the extras aren't copious, but it sure looks great. And I liked the movie, too. Definitely one of the best from Buena Vista so far.

Looks like BD is starting to score higher on PQ.

Is this because you now use the PS3 instead of the Samsung BD1000? Or are you still using Samsung?

I second that ?

I remember ya (Peter) commenting on how the PQ looked a bit better on the PS3 than the Sammy. Sinse Superman: The Movie review have ya been using the PS3?

The only Buena Vista title I've watched was Gone in 60 Seconds, excellent PQ. I bought it based on your review. The PQ does stutter throughout, so I returned it for another copy & still got the stutter using the Samsung. This is the only title I've seen with that problem.

I Bought Enemy of the State but am concerned if the PQ will stutter on that one also being a Buena Vista title & all.

I really like this movie, one of Will Smith's finest imo. I did not own this movie on DVD so it looks like it'll be a must-have on BD.

I just got this movie and the special features were running in 1080i, but it appears that they were all simply upscaled to 1080i. Also, the theatrical trailer is 1080p (not upscaled), not 480p.

Default Problem with Enemy of the State on PS3

Last night, I installed firmware version 1.32 from 1.11 on my PS3. The first film I watched was Enemy of the State, which I haven't seen on BD. I noticed a kind of vibration/stuttering effect on a lot of shots in the film. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but my roommate confirmed that he too was bothered by it. I've never seen this and have watched over 40 high-def discs on both BD and HD-DVD. Is this the disc or the firmware update? Anyone else notice this on EotS? Krammer seems to have seen the same effect on another BV disc. Thanks for any input. Later!

If the ps3 is running in 1080i mode, and your TV does not have good deinterlacing, then it might look like that. My TV has perfect 3:2 deinterlacing for 1080i, but my TV also has 1080p, so I use that. Also, I notice whenever I have my TV set to "DVI" mode instead of "HDMI" mode (DVI mode means you see every pixel and there's no sound from the HDMI cable, and HDMI mode cuts off some pixels and lets you use the HDMI cable for audio) it doesn't expect a 1080i image as DVI mode is basically meant for using it as a PC monitor, and it doesn't take the time to deinterlace it properly and it very stuttery like you say, so whenever I have 1080i content I'm viewing, I change my TV to HDMI mode instead of DVI mode.

My TV is the Sceptre x37Sv 37" LCD 1080p

I bought this and watched it yesterday. Compared with recent BDs, I would give it a 4 for video. There were many scenes that were crystal clear, but once in a while there would be a scene that would be noticeably less sharp and look more like a DVD.

The main reason I bought this was due to the fact that my DVD version is non-anamorphic (I had to give my wife some reason).

Finally got to see this today. Actually I find the video transfer a little less than what people are stating here. It definitely looks like it came from an older master that honestly seemed a bit dingy. Would be interesting to see how it would look with a newly minted master.

As for the audio, it was certainly a step-up from the DVD but quite honestly, I didn't find it overwhelming from either a clarity or envelopment standpoint.
