Thumbs up 'Superman Returns' -- High-Def Digest review

Checked out the new Sup'

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/supermanreturns.html

I'm sure i'm not alone in being displeased that Blu-ray continues to get the short thrift in terms of Dolby TrueHD tracks. There seems to be no reason not to include one at this point. Otherwise, easily on par with the HD DVD version...

This is one I'll take a pass on. I've only had my Samsung for 4 days, and so I have many titles to purchase from the last few months. I'm very satisfied with the picture and sound so far, but if many more releases are shortchanged to their HD DVD counterparts I'll be joining those dual-format owners sooner rather than later.

Superman is one of the few films which was filmed on HD cameras, so there is no telecine (if I'm terming it right), next to CG Animated this would be 'As good as it gets' in terms of picture quality. (if encoded properly)

Well the fact that this doesn't include TrueHD makes me glad I stuck with the HD-DVD version. It does make me think that Warner are hedging their bets but still siding with HD-DVD...

Comparing HD to BD, for $5 more you get a DD HD track and a copy of the movie on DVD so you can watch it on more than just your main HT setup.

Keep in mind that there's a lot that happens that we can't see in the legal world of things. Something like the DD HD track being on HD and not BD may be the result of legal restrictions, or other factors. They have the track, obviously, it's just a matter of why it wasn't included on both releases that should be throwing up flags.

Rumblings that Blu-ray backers were beginning to complain that Warner is not playing fair and equal by piling up the exclusive extras on HD DVD releases but leaving them off their Blu-ray counterparts is not entirely unreasonable. With true IME-like functionality still rumored to be a year off for Blu-ray (due to development and player compatibility issues)
Just read the BD review, is that sourced anywhere? That's like asking an Olympic athlete to run slower because a kid can't run as fast (yet if ever...)

Warner never said they were going to play fair. They just said they were going to release most titles on both formats. Warner has always said HD-DVD was their main priority, and have backed it since it was first announced.

My only guess as to why Blu-Ray still does not have 1 Dolby Digital TrueHD title, is because they are having issues getting it to work on mass produced titles. That could be the only reason since Superman Returns is a BD50, and the rest of the extras are identical to the 30gb HD-DVD title there is no way the 50gb disc was too full to have the soundtrack on it. With each 50gb title that comes out it really makes you wonder what the 50gb was needed for.

Default Blu-Ray is better !!

I love highdefdigest.com, but why they allways think HD-DVD is better? I don't understand that. Blu-Ray is BIGGER and LOT BETTER, like Superman Returns tell you that. I know it, I tested it.

Umm.... Blu-ray didn't even include the DD TrueHD track... In all aspects, HD DVD and BD are equal, except that HD DVD has better audio options this time.

Did you see what they say Sony's hit movies Click and Talladega Nights? I can't believe what they say...

Movies are 50 GB Blu-Ray with magical perfect picture and sound quality, lot better than any HD-DVD movie, I think that way.

Where can I buy some of this magic? Being a specialist you should know. Do they pack the magic under the TDK shield so that the magic isn't scratched off? BD and HD use the same masters, and the same codecs. Neither of those films are on HD DVD so there's no direct comparison that can be made. So the reviews here pretty much match what the users are saying on this message board (from BD supporters) and what other sources are saying as well. Blu-ray doesn't make the picture or sound good, it's a data medium which stores files encoded in MPEG-2, VC-1 and AVC, the same as HD DVD.

Two words, Subjective Perspective. You don't seem interested in finding out how a technology works, you've obviously bought a PS3 or Blu-ray player AND you're making general comments along the lines of "If you're not with us, you're against us". Yes BD has more space than HD, but no that does not translate into better picture quality.

I do wonder whether the average consumer will notice the subtle differences between the two releases though. It is only enthusiasts like us that will really give a damn!

i guess im the only one who thought this wasnt as good as a BD release as the others ive bought- comparing to Mi3 and ice age i thought superman was a little worse- i got alot of shots where i would get "compression" in dark scenes- where in the same type of scenes in MI3 would look fantastic....

Also is ther anyone who can shed some light on me how Dolby Digital truhd works? do you need an amplifier that uses the encoding method or do all dolby digital amps feature it? Im not sure how it all works.
