Default Disney to make at least 7 DVD/BD combo's in 2009?

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will include a standard-definition DVD copy within many of its 2009 Blu-ray Disc releases, reports Video Business.

After success including a standard DVD of Sleeping Beauty within the film's Oct. 7 Blu-ray release, Disney plans to do the same with all Blu-ray titles starting with the March 10 bow of Pinocchio running through to the October rollout of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is estimated there will be approximately seven such forthcoming standard/high-def 'Combo Packs.' Disney's Feb. 17 Blu-ray release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year also will feature a standard-def DVD.

Although Disney will face some additional cost with this dual-format strategy, the studio wants to help people enjoy the titles in more places within the home, says the trade. Families can watch the movies on their primary Blu-ray-equipped home theater systems, but also on existing standard DVD players elsewhere in the home. This expansion is similar in concept to digital copy, which allows DVD/Blu-ray buyers view titles on physical set-top machines as well as computers and portable media devices such as iPods.

"There is some expense, but we think that it is worth it," said Lori MacPherson, Disney general manager of North America. "Families now have Blu-ray players. But they don't have Blu-ray players in every room. There is now utility for all of their [DVD] players, and families aren't penalized [by not being able to use them] when they buy a Blu-ray title."

Additionally, Disney hopes to persuade standard DVD households, possibly considering purchasing a Blu-ray player soon, to upgrade to the combo Blu-ray version.

"Families planning to buy a Blu-ray player can still buy the movie now," added MacPherson.

The studio also plans to include a digital copy on 14 of its upcoming Blu-ray releases.

Bolt and HSM3 will be doing this.

Just another reason why Disney is the best.

This is about the combo's, not about the movies that are coming out

Wonder if the "cost" of the DVD will be passed down to us or they will eat it.

who the hell approves of combo discs? i personally hate them, as well as others hated HD DVD combos.

in a couple of years DVD will become obsolete, why are they doing this after Blu-ray has been in the market for some years now.

no, combos were great. We had to pay a $4 premium for them and that is why they got the bad rap. Then universal had issues with them on certain titles which did not help the cause.

However Disney prices this, the straight Blu-ray release could be sold for several dollars less and that is my preference. I sold my DVD of Sleeping Beauty and will do the same everytime I am forced to buy the DVD when all I want is the Blu-ray version. If the price is too high including the DVD, I will just pass. I can't believe for a second there is any significant market that wants both the Blu-ray and the DVD but if Disney believes using this short term promotion will help Blu-ray adoption, they can do it, but they shouldn't expect me to help fund it.

As anything other than a short term promotion, Disney is way too smart to do this. I think it is stupid for the short term but I understand their reasoning, right now Blu-ray growth is slower than it was hoped it would be and people might be more inclined to buy a Blu-ray player and get the Blu-ray versions of these great films. The best strategy in my opinion, sell the best straight Blu-ray titles at the best price and let the market decide what it wants.

Problem is, they will do a normal 2 disc and a 3 disc with slip. I want the slip. I have to buy the more expensive version for the slip cover...sigh. Guess I'll just sell the bonus DVD on eBay or Half.com.

I very much approve. You do know Disney is a family oriented company right? And typical parents cant afford to have a blu ray player in every room including the kids room, or a laptop with BD capabilities. It also gives people a chance to purchase the DVD for now, and blu ray for later instead of waiting for it to be released out of the vault again in 10 years.

Gotta think sometimes. May not be of much use to you, but you are only 1 person

I think they are just coming in one, 3 disc edition. It will cost the same as Narnia, Wall E, and Sleeping Beauty. I dont know that for sure, but it would make the most sense.

I dont think we'll be paying any premiums since in store Sleeping Beauty (which only had 1 edition that included the DVD) and it was only $27 ($22 online)

If I can't watch it on BD, not interested. It's nice to include the DVD but my SB is just wasting away in the case. I forgot all about Snow White...*goes to quickly liquidate his DVD copy* lol

You could always sell the DVD copy to someone if you don't want it...or trade it in at some places like Blockbuster. I for one think it's very nice to include a free DVD.

They are NOT talking about combos, as in one disk, two side; they are talking about inserting a separate DVD in the package like they did with Sleeping Beauty, a great idea.

There is nothing to think! anyone nowadays can afford a BD player, for gods sake they have one @ Blockbuster for just $128, and other retail stores carry $100 BD players. There is really no excuse for not owning one. They are cheaper than ever.
