Default 'La Femme Nikita' - High-Def Digest Review

Josh has reviewed 'La Femme Nikita.' He says the film is a classic. This Blu-ray features excellent video and audio, but no supplements. Still, the movie alone warrants a recommendation.

I've never seen it, but since there are no extra features, this disc is not even worth $10. Talk about a big rip off in the price factor.

I like this film a lot. It was also one of the free DVDs I received from MGM back in that old promotion they did for the new special editions.

Going by the video and audio it looks like a worthy upgrade. Too bad I can't outright replace it...lack of extras and all.

I love this movie but i disagree with the title being changed to La Femme Nikita, instead of its original title "Nikita"...... I guess USA audiences didn't see this until after the tv show ?

The movie itself is excellent, far superior to that Bridget Fonda crap that came out as The Assassin.

For me its perfect movie first and then special features... I buy the movie every time not the features - as far as im concerned the features are free when i buy the movie.

The movie has been called 'La Femme Nikita' ever since its 1991 American theatrical release. Here is Roger Ebert's review from April of that year:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/...104030301/1023

The movie was retitled partially to distinguish it from the River Phoenix movie 'Little Nikita' which had been released a couple years earlier.

The later TV series simply followed the American naming convention.

For what it's worth, the on-screen title still reads 'Nikita'. The longer title is only present on the packaging.

Personally, I have a pet peeve against movies that are generically titled with just the main character's name (except in the cases of historical bio-pics of real famous people). It really irks me to see movies with titles like 'Ed' or 'Eddie' or even 'Jerry McGuire' or 'Michael Clayton'. Who the hell is Michael Clayton and what does that title tell me about the movie? Nothing. All it tells me is that the screenwriter was too lazy to come up with a better title and just typed the character's name onto the cover sheet as a placeholder that he never updated.

Can you imagine if 'The Godfather' had been called 'Michael' instead? How many people do you think would rush out to buy the restored 'Michael Trilogy' box set on Blu-ray?

So, for that reason, I prefer 'La Femme Nikita'. However, I can see why that wouldn't play well in France, where it literally means "The Woman Nikita". But adding the "femme" gives it the connotation that she's a femme fatale, which I think works strongly in its favor.

I do know what youre saying Josh, But like Original Aspect ratios... I also like original titles

I have only ever know the movie as NIKITA for many many years.....so LA FEMME NIKITA immediately struck me as a tv series rip off name. thanks for clearing up the confusion for me though. Ive only been in North America for two years, so often don't know alternative titles.....

there may be more.... lol

Same here. I got the out of print Special Edition DVD for a premium price about a month before they announced the blu-ray and was torn between replacing it or not.

No extras = no replacy, and I'm not about to have 2 copies, one for the image and one for the extras. (hmm unless I get me a bluray case with room for 2 discs and... naaaaaaa....)

Thanks for reviewing it!

The extras on the DVD really weren't all that special.

Only thing worth watching was the trailer and you can see that online easily enough.
