Default 'Hot Rod' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter has reviewed 'Hot Rod.' The comedy is pretty slim here. This Blu-ray has just decent video, audio, and supplements. A rental. Fans with the HD DVD can hold tight, no need for a repurchase.

I am getting this Blu-ray. Probably one of the few who like it.

I know the review is not new (its the same one for the HD DVD) but it requires repeating on my part: This was the absolute worst film review I've ever read on the site. Comments such as saying the movie panders to the lowest-common denominator with a focus on gross-out jokes (other than a single joke involving martial arts and making someone relieve themselves) make me wonder if he's blowing minor things out of proportion or if he simply wasn't paying attention. Also, he is somehow JUST observant enough to note that Will Ferrel movies are genre parodies, but not observant enough to recognize this was the exact same things. Also, Samberg was "copying Will Ferrels mannerisms"? Really? The movie was originally going to be a Ferrel vehicle, but when he decided to produce it instead, Samberg and his pals (from their sketch group The Lonely Island) reworked the script to fit their sense of humor, most noteably changing Rod from an out of shape 40-something loser still living with his parents (like in the recent film Step Brothers) to a young naive screwup.

Then again, I payed attention to and liked this movie, so I might be biased. Will be grabbing this on tuesday, for sure.

Edit: By the way Peter, you mention your distaste for gross-out humor in this film. Did you scrutinize the unrated cut of Anchorman too, or did you give that film a free pass due to your apparent and possibly unhealthy obsession with Ferrel?

So underrated. A shame the reviewer doesn't get it. Probably the kind of guy who loves Jay Leno but doesn't get Conan O'Brien. I firmly believe that this movie will eventually pick up a head of steam and get recognized for the GREAT comedy that it is. Soooo worth watching. Obviously get it for the best version of the movie and not as demo material.

Strange, for once I agree with the reviewer (usually I have the same feeling as you guys) except I would have given this movie 1 star. I'm sorry but this film was a piece of crap not even worth being with thrown into a bag then set on fire, Samberg should stick to his SNL digital shorts while Ferrel does the funny on film...however I am also not a huge fan of Anchorman and I know it's not just me.

I'm definitely picking this up. I haven't laughed that hard through a movie in a long time.

Especially the Rod punch dancing his rage scene.

Haven't seen this and feel that it could go either way - will Netflix it. Hope it's good (or at least worth the time).

This is easily the worst movie I've seen in the last 3 years. Criminally unfunny. The reviewer was very kind to give it 2.5 stars and people are still complaining about it. This movie is horrible, people. And it's not because I'm a film snob -- Step Brothers is damn hilarious. I would have given this 1 star for the one, maybe 2, laughs I got from it. Don't blind buy it expecting Samberg to be as hilarious as he is in his SNL viral videos. He comes nowhere close.

I see no potential for this to ever become a cult favorite down the line. Maybe in very, very, very small cult circles.

My wife and I couldn't stand this movie and turned it off after about 25 minutes. We both love almost anything Will Ferrel related and I actually find Samberg hilarious on SNL. This film was just plain bad.
