Default 'Awake' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter has reviewed 'Awake.' He says this is a queasy thriller that falls short. This Blu-ray has very nice video and audio, and some decent supplements. Give it a rent.

I thought this movie looked intriguing but Hayden Christensen can promptly ruin a movie quite easily.

I found this movie to be kind of silly, but highly enjoyable. All of the plot twists could be seen a mile away, but it was fun to watch the movie unfold. I'm not sure why this movie was marketed as a horror film too. There wasn't even one aspect of this movie that came anywhere close to making it a horror film.

If you go into this expecting a horror film, you will be greatly disappointed. However, if you go in expecting a B-movie with elements of drama and suspense then you will have some fun with the movie. Terrence Howard is as good as always, but Christensen and Alba's acting really drag the movie down and help to create some unintentional "LOL moments." Overall, I would give the movie a 3 out of 5 because it did manage to entertain me from beginning to end.

I agree. It's not that bad of a movie and it was enjoyable. My only problem is Hayden Christianson's acting in all his films. The guy sounds like he is sleep walking acting. His monotone voice drives me nuts. I think he is getting a little bit better, but he really needs to be more uplifting in his tone.

Awake was alright. I agree with the review it takes a bit to long to get going, and then kind of goes all over the place. It can get frustrating with these types of films, so patience is needed. It's no way a horror film, not even close.
The subject of the film has been touched on before, a little differently though in the movie Sublime with Thomas Cavanagh of the t.v. series Ed. I'm also not the biggest fan of Hayden, but I can handle him. It's funny the girls get Hayden, which most don't care how good of an actor he is, he's just nice to look at on screen. And the boys get Jessica Alba who is a weak actress, but is nice to look at on screen. Although I do give credit to Hayden's performance in Shattered Glass, which he did a good job.
I just can't get myself to buy this film when I know i'll never want to watch it again.

A 2? Sure, it isn't the greatest movie ever made, but it is most certainly better than a 2. I mean the suspense is excellent, as is the twist, plus the acting is quite excellent, especially considering it has Jessica Alba in it. Who knew she could actually act a little?

The Supplements: Digging Into the Good Stuff

All of the supplements contained on the previous DVD release of 'Awake' are ported over to this Blu-ray, and it's an adequate if unremarkable package. All video materials are presented in full 1080 video, with the same subtitle options as the main feature.
..
Featurette: "Under the Knife & Behind the Camera: The Making of Awake" (HD, 12 minutes)
..
Deleted Scenes (HD, 7 minutes)
..
Storyboard Comparison (HD)
..
Theatrical Trailer (HD)....
This must be "Awake: the Special Peter Bracke Blu-ray Edition" release .... because the copy I bought from Best Buy certainly doesn't have "full 1080 video" supplements. Not a single one, in fact: including the Trailer (which is not only in 480p like the rest, but also windowboxed within). I'd sure appreciate if Peter could swap copies with me.

...that odd technical inaccuracy with his review aside, I would agree with what appears to be prevailing opinion in this thread: it's not a fantastic movie, but it's not bad. It would actually be great material for a remake someday. I thought they wrapped-up too many loose ends too easily at the end. A dash of vengeance would have been more rewarding, I think.

I found this to be one of the most under appreciated movies of 2007. And no, it's not supposed to be a horror film in any way. It felt like a Hitchcockian thriller and I'm sure, without a doubt, if Hitchcock himself was alive today, he would enjoy this movie. The plot itself is great for ensuing plot twists, and you can't help but have compassion for some of the characters in the movie, especially what happens in the third act. This is the type of film where the less you know about it, the better it would be overall. The film is immensely entertaining from beginning to end and yes, I was caught off by the many twists and turns in the film. This movie is an excellent suspense/thriller. If you like movies that make you think, or tricks you into thinking one thing and having turn a complete 360 towards the end, you'll love this movie. You won't regret it. 8/10

I watched this without seeing any kind of trailer for it and it wasn't the greatest movie but I did enjoy it overall.
