Default 'Monster's Ball' - High-Def Digest Review

Ken's review of 'Monster's Ball' has been posted. He says the film is a challenging drama, with strong performances, but some problematic casting. This Blu-ray makes the previous DVD look like a VHS tape, with excellent video, faithful DTS HD Master Audio, and a good (but incomplete) assortment of extras. Worth a look.

hey, it's better that than mentioning the comparison to the fish out of water Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls.

quoted for evidence. now you'll never be able to bid on a date w/ her at some charity auction.

i still have never seen this movie. have the dvd, but i have so much other stuff to watch, i'll never get around to it. makes me wonder if i should even think about wanting the blu. i'll always have some other title to watch instead. me = bad about that kind of stuff.

There's an idea. Anyone for Showgirls on Blu? I'd buy that for a dollar.

I thought this was the Unrated cut? Not the R Rated cut.

The Unrated cut being the cut the rest of the world got in the first place. I hope it's the Unrated cut (ie. - Uncut).

Nice review Ken, very interesting as usual. However, I don't agree with you: I think deducting a star or one and a half because Hall Berry looks too pretty is rather petty. I remember being quite startled by the way Halle Berry looks in the film the first time I saw it. Still very beautiful of course, but at the same time somehow plain and totally unglamorous, nothing like a supermodel. While I have trouble understanding how any woman would fall for Billy Bob (much as I like him as an actor ), I found the film to be totally convincing in all aspects. I absolutely agree with your assessment of Heath Ledger's performance; few scenes on film have shocked and moved me as much as what happens to him here. Peter Boyle is also particularly good as the hateful racist bigot.

Imho this is one of the best films in recent years and deserves 4,5-5 stars. Of course, the fact that the director is a countryman of mine has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my opinion.

PS: don't be surprised to learn that the Lionsgate HQ burned to the ground if it turns out that this release is region-locked.

Results of the official recount: 120 , 122 . I'm even more shocked.
Heavily into necrophilia - still enjoying 'dead' HD DVDs.

blind bought this at best buy for 12 dollars, wanted to see this after hearing much talk about it, watched it last night and was surprised at how little screen time heath ledger had before [spoiler]he killed himself[spoiler]. but halle was SMOKIN' the whole time. very good performances, good movie but not a masterpiece. maybe a second viewing is in order...

I adored this film. It's that rare drama that starts in the pit of darkness and illuminates into something truly heartfelt and romantic. Halle Berry earned her Oscar, I only wish Billy Bob, Peter Boyle and director Marc Forster could've have been nominated as well.

It's an oddity that the Addica/Rokos commentary from the Unrated DVD is included on the BD but not the two commentaries from featuring Thornton & Berry from the R-Rated version.
