Default 'Beetlejuice' - High-Def Digest Review

Josh has reviewed 'Beetlejuice.' He say's Tim Burton's breakout has aged gracefully over the past 20 years. The Blu-ray has pretty good High-Def video, ok audio, and skimpy extras. Worth a recommendation anyway.

nice review. i'd never checked the extras package for the title (have it incoming), and i'm surprised it's that skimped out, that's ridiculous.

i, too, hate how recent WB releases default to the crap audio track, not the good one. i don't mind how they have no menu, but defaulting as they do is like it starting in standard def, and having to switch it to 1080p.

Most people seem to be under the impression that if it doesn't have TrueHD on the box, then it's audio is immediately sub-par. Although there have been plenty of TrueHD, PCM and DTS-MA soundtracks that have underwhelmed.

My take on the BD.... my thoughts are very similar to Josh's.

For all it's faults the TrueHD track is a marked improvement over the standard Dolby on the DVD and Blu-ray.

so did you actually listen to the isolated film score, because from the one sentence that this feature is given. i would guess not. there are some people out there who this feature is a big selling point.

Good review. Beetlejuice is a classic around these parts.

The one thing I find disturbing about it though, is that he mentions a lenticular slip cover for the disc. I got mine from Amazon, and it had no such cover. Would've been cool to have.

On a side note, I'm a lil confused as to why Warner didn't make this one a digibook.

I don't consider a digibook an upgrade. I'd prefer the dull boring regular cover with a slip cover that they gave it. I find it a shame that they are putting out these films as digibooks without giving consumers a second choice. The slip cover for Beetlejuice is really nice, though. None of the ones at my local best buy have the slip cover, either.

Proving once again that technical specs alone are less important to determining quality than other aspects of a disc's mastering, the Blu-ray's lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack is merely adequate.
I can't agree with you more Josh. Very nice review.

I just picked this up last night, and I have never seen Beetlejuice look so awesome. The CD sampler was a nice addition, but I would've really loved it if it was a full soundtrack, though.

What exactly did you want me to say about it that "Danny Elfman's score and the calypso songs are isolated in Dolby Digital 5.1" doesn't cover?

Pretty spot on review. I know this is a busy time of year for releases, but any reason it took so long to review?
