Default 'Casino Royale' (Collector's Edition) - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of the 'Casino Royale' (Collector's Edition) is up. He says this is the version that should have been released on Blu-ray the first time around. The feature itself comes out the same (which is a good thing!), and the exclusive supplements are worth the wait. Not a must buy if you don't care about the extra goodies, but if you've held off on picking this one up, now is the perfect time!

Is it the same PG-13 release as the previous one? I thought this issue is an unrated version.

I love Casino Royale. I'm not sure what Columbia Pictures is giving us with this re-release.

I'll pass.

I sold my copy when this was first announced for $20. So I'll be picking it up for sure. Does this include a ticket for Quantum of Solace? If so that makes it all the more sweeter.

The text in the audio part of the review says they ditched the PCM for TrueHD in this version but in the specs on the left it shows PCM 5.1 as well as TrueHD???

What gives? Was looking forward to seeing both tracks on the disc like 300 but I guess that ain't happening. Interestingly at dvdempire.com the spec is only Dolby TrueHD for English and French. No mention of PCM.

The switcheroo doesn't result in any appreciable drop-off in quality, though after a series of very anal comparisons, I can say I would probably give the slightest of edges to the PCM -- but only the slightest.
Any noticeable difference between PCM and TrueHD (as well as DTS:MA) is the result of hardware and hardware alone. As long as both are from the same master, they are identical in bit-for-bit output. As this would differ with everyone's hardware, it shouldn't be included in the review.

Can't believe a so-called 'expert' reviewer thinks that a losslessly compressed track is different to a lossless PCM track. It's getting to a point where I'm going to stop believing anything reviewers that claim there is a difference.

If he'd actually bother to do research about the format he'd see that TrueHD can contain meta-data telling the decoder to adjust various things which would account for any differences. As would a different master (this is unlikely to be used though) But it's nothing to do with the fact it's been LOSSLESSLY compressed.

I wish Dolby would come round and explain to various reviewers and certain magazine editors what the word lossless actually means.
