Default 'The Omen: The Collection' - High-Def Digest Review

Ken has reviewed 'The Omen Collection.' He says it's a must for fans and completists, but says newcomers or folks unsure of the sequels should do some research before buying this set instead of the standalone release of the original.

Good job on that lengthy and informative review Ken.

The packaging still sucks though. LOL!

Thanks for your compliments!

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit what I did to "fix" my lingering issues with the toilet-paper box the discs came bundled in, but I went to town on mine with a pair of scissors. Seriously, I felt like a kid in kindergarten at the craft table.

Here's the rundown. I already had 'The Omen 666' on standalone BD, so I took my 3-disc 'Speed Racer' case, chucked the bonus game and digital copy discs, transferred my 'Speed Racer' disc and cover art to an single-disc case (which are a cinch to buy online, unlike 3 or 4 disc BD cases), loaded the first three 'Omen' films in the 3 disc slots, and carved up and trimmed down the outer box to make a nice little slip cover.

I probably could have just printed out a custom cover of some sort, but that didn't feel right. Ah well, I felt genuine pride when I was done and slid my new original 'Omen' trilogy onto my shelf next to 'The Omen 666' case. Definitely a low-tech solution, but one that I was satisfied with when all was said and done.

Magnolia Pictures

Great idea Ken, you should get some pics in this thread! Would love to see how it turned out.

Wow, Ken. You're like MacGuyver. All you need now is the mullet. Good job on the review by the way.

That is a good idea. I need to get some cases myself to get rid of this horrible packaging. LOL!

Question

Anyone have any idea why (other than the fact that it sucked) "Omen 4: The Awakening" wasn't included in the Blu-Ray set, since they DID include it in the last Omen DVD collection?

For anal completists like me, it means I've still gotta hang on to one more DVD I was hoping I could replace with a Blu-Ray.

I was thinking the exact same thing about Omen 4. Good job Fox. Top notch.

No one ever refers to number 4. The Omen is always referred to as a trilogy seeing how 4 was a TV movie.

Since Fox included it in the last 2 "Omen Collection" DVD sets they released, they must have recently changed their minds.

In other words, it being a TV/Cable movie didn't keep them from including it in the DVD sets, so why leave it out now?

Or perhaps we can look forward to an "Even More Complete Omen Collection" Blu-Ray set in time for next Halloween?

I have posted my review of the box set. I wasn't too happy with some things with this package, especially the omission of Omen IV and that shoddy packaging. For fans, this is worth it, but those that aren't fans I would hold off for a cheaper price since $90 is a bit too much.

So wait, there's literally nothing holding the discs except a rubber tab in the center? Not even the usual hard-plastic-glued-to-cardboard thing, like the 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' set?

Edit: My curiosity got the better of me. The box itself is handsomely designed, but yeah, there's nothing but a circle of soft foam rubber holding each disc in place (and nothing at all protecting the disc surface, unless glossy-finish cardboard counts--do your stuff, hard coating). It's less precarious than it sounds, but it still looks possible to not put the disc back securely without noticing. If you press on the foam circle as you take the disc out, as you'd do for a normal case, it doesn't seem like there's much danger of it being ripped off the cardboard backing...but I would not be surprised if it happened eventually. And if you didn't press on it I imagine it'd rip off pretty quickly. Overall it's not disastrous, but it'll make you a bit nervous.

What a strange idea. If it was to save money, they really should have covered themselves by trumpeting that it was environmentally friendly or something.

P.S. The box got no damage whatsoever in shipping, for me at least, and it had Amazon's usual painfully tight plastic wrapping and everything. My personal standard for flimsy box sets is the two-volume Mario Bava DVD collection, one volume of which was wrecked during shipping when I first got it; it's the softest, most easily crushed cardboard I've seen. I was expecting this to be as bad as that, after hearing all of the complaints, but it's not.

I've got the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD. I know you may have heard bad things about it, but I've got to tell you: Never buy the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD.
